Pause playback during video mode changes

Using nvidia shield and samsung 4K TV through AVR.
Video mode switching is enabled.
When I play content that changes video modes the TV takes several seconds before it starts playing video (the TV shows a spinner while it changes modes), while the AVR will start playing audio.

Problem is that audio is almost always out of sync by the time the video starts.
I have to fwd / rew / pause / play / start / stop several times for the audio to sync up again.

How can I get the player to change the video mode, wait for the TV to change modes and get ready, and then start playback of content?
