Permissions issues on DSM 7

For Future Reference:

When logs are requested, the normal procedure is:

  1. Plex/Web browser.
  2. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
  3. Attach the ZIP file it gives you.

like this ChuckPa ?

@Renato-Merlin

Yes, exactly like that.

I can easily see :

Jan 03, 2021 01:27:20.831 [0x7f544c43f700] WARN - Error scanning directory, we'll skip and continue: boost::filesystem::directory_iterator::construct: Permission denied: "/volume1/photo/1000 a 1999"

To correct problems like this is very easy:

  1. Open File Station (You’ve already granted Plex permission to read the shared folder)

  2. Open the shared folder which contains your media

  3. In the left panel,

  4. Right-click on the shared folder (Photo)

  5. Click “Properties”
    Screenshot from 2021-01-04 05-22-38

  6. In the popup, select Permissions tab

  7. Set the permissions as I show here.
    a. You own the media
    b. Plex can read the media but not modify it (no write permission)

  8. Be certain to click “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files”

  9. Click OK

When this is complete, Plex will be able to read the files.

Chuck I totally have a different situation in my DS920+ view of right click properties and permissions ?

What you show me here is the Shared Folder permissions.
This is correct.

What you must next do, because of the files inside the shared folder, is as I show.

What you’ll want to add is Read, Write, and Execute for all the checkboxes.
The shared folder permissions will control actual access.

It’s a bit odd.

  1. One set of permissions to access the folder
  2. Another set inside the folder.

This happens often with photos because of how they are uploaded.

Are you still using the DSM 6 version PMS on DSM 7 ??

Thanks Chuck but in Photos Folder When Right Click From Inside is totally different compare to Music , video , or any folders on the left , all can lead to the read write execute screen , but the one from photos on right click is like if you click from outside from the folder

I see the problem.

  1. Do not use username Plex in DSM 7. The new username is PlexMediaServer. You can safely delete user Plex. Do not delete PlexMediaServer

  2. Update all your permissions to use “System Internal User” PlexMediaServer instead of Plex.

These are detailed in the installation instructions and on the Blue popup I print every time the package installs (the final page).

Not Easier To Rename it ? or should create a New PlexMediaServer user ?

You did not read the Preview thread announcement?

All of this was detailed.

In summary: In DSM 7, we were forced to abandon everything.

I Never Read All Of that , just don’t understand why the software hasn’t rename that on his own if that was needed to work . also why is working with everything else in the previous name and just with Photo should create a problem ? IS THERE a WAY to Start on a Fresh Install pulling out the 2 disc from the DS920+ and reset or something like that for not erasing the Files ? or Should i download all Files on external hard disks reset everything and fill the media again ?

or I just go into user and group and delete Plex and go into file station shared folder and also delete the Plex empty folder ?

and create a new user with name PlexMediaServer ? at the moment is not possible to do that till the Plex user existing it says this name already exist

You are not understanding how much DSM 7 has been changed by Synology.
Your failure to read the entire document I wrote has put you in this awkward position now.

In short form - WE NO LONGER HAVE ANY PRIVILEGES on DSM 7. Nobody does.

User Plex is a normal User class account
On DSM 7, PlexMediaServer is a Package user class account.

Synology now makes VERY strong delineation between these two types of usernames.

  1. Delete user Plex
  2. Grant media permissions to PlexMediaServer
  3. DO NOT DELETE user PlexMediaServer unless you fully intend to remove PlexMediaServer from the system. - It is created by DSM , not Plex. If you do remove it then you will be forced to start all over again.

i understand that but You said to not delete PlexMediaServer , but I didn’t saw that name anywhere in my system , I only SAW Plex or Plex user everywhere

Please observe carefully:

Local Users (normal)

System Internal Users (packages)

This is an artificial construct created by Synology.

Linux does not care because both are valid Linux accounts.
On the other hand, Synology has grouped them by the User ID (UID) number internally on Linux.

Synology has taken DSM in an entirely different direction than in versions past.

This is a big adjustment for everyone.

so if I delete the user Plex I will be able to recreate a user PlexMediaServer and will be ok ?

Delete user Plex.

If the PlexMediaServer package is installed then System Internal user PlexMediaServer already exists. There is nothing to create. DSM creates it for us during package installation.

If you look at the Control Panel - Users menu,

you will find only user Plex may be deleted. It is 100% safe to delete it.

I thought we could only let DSM7 update the builds automatically because it was using “special builds". I’ll install the update manually then. As a related note, I only see 1.21.1.3830-6c22540d5 available for download on the download page

I’m still struggling a but to understand how to deal with files added over LAN and ACL, but I probably need to do more reading. I am obviously missing some pieces of the puzzle and I can’t yet figure out how to upload files to the Synology while giving PMS fun control over them.

@cortig

You only need give user PlexMediaServer permission to read your media files.

The easiest way to do this is by granting permission to the shared folder which contains them.

I detailed how to do this in the Preview thread as well as in the final popup after installation completes. (The popup with a blue banner)
