(Synology) Server Version#: 1.19.1.2645
(TV) Player Version#: 7.30.2.16712
I’ve red all the related topics but I’m not sure if this problem has been fixed or not. I have a couple of portrait videos (shot vertically on Samsung mobiles) and when I try to play them on my Philips Android TV, they do play but image is distorted and looks like Plex is trying to rotate the video, only the video not the container itself (don’t know how to explain it better). I mean the black edges are still there, the size is still there but the content is rotated.
Not sure at this point if it’s a settings issue or just an unsolved bug still present.
Hi everyone thank you very much for your answers. I’ve done a little test today by shooting 2 videos with my Samsung Galaxy S9+ with unlocked orientation (just in case). I still don’t understand where the problem is, I have no backgroung on all this, but on my windows 10 PC with the Plex desktop client it works correctly. On my mobile with Plex Android client it works correctly. Everywhere else It looks fine, just not on my TV via Plex.
Not sure if of any importance but I disabled transcoding on server with the new option you guys implemented not long ago.
So how does Windows and Samsung players know how to play it ? Maybe aspect ratio ?
The problem really is with the TV or Android TV not sure yet (My family has the same playback problems from my Plex server and they all use this OS-type TVs, diferent brands). I used the same videos and played directly from USB with the same result so no blame to PLEX this time
I tried to change the orientation metadata (exif) by using exiftool and ffmpeg command line with no result/improvement
I re-encoded the videos using the Windows 10 default video editing tools and then the video played correctly (yes VLC shows diferent orientation matrix now)
So I believe there is more than this orientation tag/information that some players use to correct and display the video correctly.
The question is, can I make a request to have some more playback options/settings when playing a video/photo ? Change the orientation ourselves ? etc. Otherwise is a real pain to re-encode all these videos and the future ones. You give recomendations to people but they still do what they want
Seems to be an Android TV issue as it’s across multiple TV brands and as I say in the other thread it persists even when I use othe media players like the native app and VLC, so not caused by Plex but it would be great if you could fix it!
