Play next episode

When a episode ends and the credits start Plex will do it’s thing and drops down to a box and I usually select ok on my remote to play next episode, but nothing happens until the credits end then I can proceed with the next episode, not sure whats going on here?

What’s the version of the Plex app installed on your Apple TV?
Do you experience this when watching videos from a playlist, episodes of a show in sequence or some other use case?

I’m frequently watching some of my shows this way and haven’t seen this issue (yet).

I am currently running v8.29 (7486)
This happens with playing from continue watching and in sequence
Some do play ok but most don’t, out of 20 episodes 4 would play ok

I have also noticed that the Skip credits show up 4 mintues before the show ends.
I have done a Plex dance and re done credits but nothing has changed.
No biggie, but would like to sort it out

Please help!!
Are these settings correct?

Those settings look ok — but they should be unrelated to the issue you’re describing. As per your description, the credit detection was (mostly) ok… Plex has recognized the start of the credit sequences and switches to the play-next screen (still playing the rest of the current video in a thumb, while displaying the thumb of the next episode and its description).

The settings are only about if/how credit detection works and when Plex will consider an episode watched (e.g. if it couldn’t detect a credit sequence).

Now… what’s actually happening when you’re on the play-next screen?
Can you click/swipe left/right to switch focus between the two thumbs?
Is the UI freezing entirely (e.g. not reacting to you clicking OK at all but also not letting you click back or anything else…)?
You’ve mentioned it’s maybe working in 4 out of 20 times… any significant differences when that happens?

Also… on what Apple TV model / version of tvOS are you experiencing this?
Sorry for asking so many questions, I’ve simply never been able to reproduce this behavior on my own Apple TV.

I’ve seen something similar to what was described.

I let a couple episodes play back-to-back. Then I happened to be paying attention when one finished, so I tried to manually click the “Up Next” option. It ignored my click and didn’t start the next episode. The credits from the previous episode kept playing.

I don’t know if it would have automatically continued if I had waited longer. I think I hit Menu/Back and then started the next episode manually.

If I can reproduce it I’ll do a better job documenting. But it was definitely after a handful of episodes had played.

Ahh, so I couldn’t hit “Up Next” while the previous episode was still playing (credits).

When I hit “Up Next” while it was still playing credits, the button depressed, but the next episode didn’t start.

When the previous episode finished playing, the “Up Next” changed to a countdown, and I could hit “Up Next” then.

Just ran into this myself for the very first time (after shuffling episodes for ages).
Very weird…

Some do work ok but there is no pattern !!

The behavior has been changed in the latest TestFlight/Beta.

It isn’t minimizing the video to the post-play screen during credits any more.

I’ve been having the same problem for a few weeks now, latest updates:
PMS 1.32.8.7639
Apple TV 8.29.
It occurs when watching simultaneous episodes of a single series in a queue. I experience it whether shuffling or playing any series, so I think it’s related to the queue handling.

When the first episode ends and the video minimizes to the post-play screen, the next episode button is highlighted and clicking the remote plays the next episode.
However for all subsequent episodes in the same queue session, clicking the Next Episode button does nothing, and will not progress until the credits/file has ended and the 15 second countdown timer starts. Then the next episode can be played by clicking the remote button.

If I reopen the video window while the credits are rolling, and skip to the end of the file to cause the countdown timer to trigger, then I can progress to the next episode.

If I instead exit the play queue back to the home/series screen and reopen the next episode manually, the process restarts. At the end of that episode, the next button will work the first time again without waiting for the countdown to start, but all subsequent episodes will be blocked in the same manner until the credits end and the timer starts.

Seeing the release notes fixed 'Prevent skipping episodes with multiple taps to play button on post play", I suspect it has something to do with this area.

FYI @tom80H
Since Plex has made changes for ATV re: skip credits by not dropping the box down does nothing IMO.
Once the show is playing the credits and hitting back on the remote it still will not play the Up Next episode until the last episode has finished/ended.

I don’t quite understand, @claynz. Can you elaborate?

I suppose what they’re trying to say is that the original issue still exists.

Plex on tvOS will no longer auto-minimize the video when reaching the final credit marker. Instead it’ll show a Skip Credits button. By clicking that you skip the credits and jump straight to the post play screen.

However if you don’t click the Skip Credits button but instead click the Back button on your remote, this will will also jump to the post play screen but the credit sequence will keep playing in the minimized video frame.

@claynz : the change has only bypassed the previously described issue. Simply click OK on your remote to trigger the Skip Credits button instead of trying to back out.

Ahh! Gotcha.

UI testing is so hard. I’m sympathetic to the QA folks.

Well said, just what I was going to say.
Yes and the skip credit button should show longer than 5 seconds

Similar/same issue

Once playing video minimizes when the “skip credits” button appears and the next video thumbnail shows, clicking this does nothing, even after timer starts.

Next video will play after timer ends, but cannot be started early.

UI is not frozen, can toggle around screen just fine.

Clicking back ends previous video, and takes you back to the screen you were on to start playing. (Ie season or Home Screen)

It’s still there. If the on-screen menu is hiding after a few seconds you can bring it back by tapping your remote‘s touchpad or clicking/swiping up (or down… I rarely use this and cannot currently verify). Once the on-screen menu is back, you’ll see the Skip Credits button is too

Update your Apple TV client. With version 8.30 there’s no more auto-minimizing.

Yes, if I hit the skip credits button in time I can click on next episode and plays ok, but if I miss the skip credits button and hit back on the remote I can not continue to play next episode until the credits has finished.
So now using the back button is not an option anymore, I am using my TV remote to navigate the Apple TV instead, so if the skip credits button continues to show until the end of the episode there shouldn’t be any issues!!
