Playback Error occurs when trying to play video after editing its file name

You can add your own posters to movies. See Local Media Assets - Movies.

Each movie must be in its own folder.

Make a separate test/working library with three or four movies.

Use that to learn how Plex handles naming, organization, custom art work, etc.

Once you’re comfortable with Plex you can then attack all the movies.

Also, look at the automated tools I mentioned earlier. Tiny Media Manager has a free version that works well. It can help when you have many files to process.

Morning Guys!

I downloaded tiny media manager and tried to test it on some movies files i have some queries.

  1. How do I get it to search and download subtitles automatically ?

  2. Can I use this program to read and rename files directly on my NAS, or do i need to do it on my pc before uploading to NAS ? currently most of my media files are on the NAS already.

  3. The auto renaming software renames the files as indicated below is this correct for plex ? i am afraid if i rename all this way i need to redo it.

Before: 101.Dalmatians.1996.1080p.webripx264-[YTS.AM]
After: 101 Dalmatians (1996) 1080p AAC

Current setting in Tiny media manager

Thank you guys for your help thus far!

Regards,
Jeremy

To make it perfect: 101 Dalmatians (1996) [1080p AAC]

Add [ before ${videoFormat}
Add ] after ${audioCodec}

The [ ] allows you to show anything informative for you but hide it from the scanner.

After renaming files — “Scan Files” so PMS can find their new filenames.

ok will do this adjustment, can i check what do you normally indicate in the name for folder and file?

Also are you able to advice on my earlier questions ?

Subtitles: Documentation is here. You have several options. They are account-global settings.

Filenaming:

This is my naming:

[chuck@lizum uhd.1996]$ ll "Tomorrowland (2015) [2160p]"
total 36549360
drwxrwxr-x 3 chuck chuck 71 Jul 19 23:20 ./
drwxr-xr-x 365 chuck chuck 16384 Dec 14 01:17 ../
-rw-rw-r-- 1 chuck chuck 37426511716 Jul 19 22:31 Tomorrowland (2015) [2160p].mkv
[chuck@lizum uhd.1997]$

I use FileBot so the syntax is a little different but does the same. I don’t list audio.

/nas/movies/{n} ({y})/{n} ({y}) [{vf}]

Yes, I rename the files directly.

My implementation is slightly different than most:

  1. I have a “work” directory which is on the NAS
    – All BluRay rips go here
    – I create structure for the extras I rip from the discs

  2. I then use FileBot to take my working copy
    – Match (which I confirm)
    – Rename. (stays in work)
    – Because I have both 1080p and 2160p, I don’t let it put the media directly there but it can. It can rename and move in one click if you want.
    – My final step is to move the 1080p to “movies” and 2160p to “uhd”
I keep my library sections separated by resolution. I could easily automate that but having final control is nice.

Example of some of my 1080p movies

drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 52 Jul 19 14:37 The Courier (2020) [1080p]/
drwxrwxr-x 2 chuck chuck 64 Aug 22 16:44 The Curse of La Llorona (2019) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 57 Jul 19 14:37 The Darkest Hour (2011) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 54 Jul 19 14:37 The Equalizer (2014) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 56 Jul 19 14:37 The Equalizer 2 (2018) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 54 Jul 19 14:37 The Exception (2017) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 62 Jul 19 14:37 The Family That Preys (2008) [1080p]/
drwxrwxr-x 2 chuck chuck 62 Jul 29 22:19 The Final Destination (2009) [1080p]/
drwxrwxr-x 2 chuck chuck 49 Jul 19 14:37 The Game (1997) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 62 Jul 19 14:37 The Girl on the Train (2016) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 61 Jul 19 14:37 The Greatest Showman (2017) [1080p]/
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 66 Jul 19 14:37 The Huntsman Winter's War (2016) [1080p]/
drwxrwxr-x 2 chuck chuck 51 Jul 19 14:37 The Island (2005) [1080p]/

Thank you so much for sharing!

so for both folder and file you name it the same?
i.e.
The Huntsman Winter’s War (2016) [1080p]

I see some people put a . in every space or _
i.e.
The_Huntsman_Winter’s_War_(2016)_[1080p]
The.Huntsman.Winter’s.War.(2016).[1080p]

Is there any benefit in doing so ?

It looks like TMM can download subtitles from subtitles.org if you use the paid version (look in the settings)…

I have the free version, which does not have that capability.

I’ve never had much luck with downloading subtitles from sources on the Internet. They seem to be badly out of sync with the movie or of poor quality, with a lot of spelling and other errors.

Regarding folders, I take the same approach as ChuckPA. I have a working folder where I rename, etc., Once finished, I then move the files to the appropriate Plex library.

I want one last chance to make sure the file plays OK, the audio & subtitle tracks are correctly named, etc.

This is a double NO NO.

The title is 4 words, not 1 concatenated word.
Spaces are important.

Noted, I’ve all along done it manually, I am ok with minor typo errors. Oh they paid version is yearly sub, don’t think I am going that route.

Q1. is your working folder also held on your NAS or on your Desktop?

Q2. Does Plex matches the naming of your folder and the file? is there anything i should take note of ?

Q3. In the TMM there is an option for trailers, would this be used or reflected in the preview of plex in any way ?

Q4. i noticed there is this 3 tabs in TMM Movies / Movie Sets / Tv Shows, are you able to briefly describe how i should be viewing them or what it means to me ?

ok roger, will just leave it as a space instead of . or _

There is this system information file generated when I use TMM to rename the movie folder and files, do you know what is that for ?

I usually prepare files on my desktop then move them to the NAS. The reason is that reading/writing to the local SSD is faster than reading/writing to the NAS on a 1 Gbps Ethernet network. If I had a 10 Gbps network then I might do most of the work directly on the NAS.

It really does not matter. Use whatever works best for you.

Follow the Plex documentation. If you do so, Plex works 99% of the time.

For TV shows, the folder name, file name, and folder structure is very important. Follow the Plex documentation as closely as possible. If you stray too far from the docs, Plex will have trouble recognizing the shows.

For movies, the file name must be correct. I keep each movie in its own folder and name the folder the same as the movie.

Plex supports placing multiple movies in a single directory, so the folder name does not have to match the file name. I do not do this. I prefer to have a folder for each movie.

Note that if you want to add extras such as trailers, use custom posters, etc, then you must place each movie in a separate folder (as mentioned in the documentation).

I don’t know. I’ve never used that part of TMM.

TMM separates movies from shows. Use the Movie tab when renaming movies, use the TV Show tab when renaming shows. I’ve never used the Movie Set tab. Not sure how that works.

I run TMM on my Windows PC. I have TMM look for movies in /Videos/TMM/movies and TV shows in /Videos/TMM/shows (in my Windows home directory).

When I’m ready to rename some movies, I place them in the movies directory, then choose “Update Sources.” TMM scans the directory and lists the files it finds. I then do “Search & Scrape” and TMM pops up a window to verify it is correctly matching each movie. I then choose “Rename & Cleanup” and that is when TMM actually renames things. There is a dry run option so you can double check before renaming.

TV shows work the same. They’re just listed under the TV Show tab.

When the files are renamed, I copy them to the appropriate location on the NAS, then tell Plex to scan the library.

You tell TMM where to look for the files in Settings.

Movies: Settings → Movies → Data Sources
Shows: Settings → TV Shows → Data Sources

I have a clear picture now thanks !

Will try Getting Plex to scan the library, I hope it will pick up the additional movies instead of me having to delete the folder and relink them.

Issues i have with existing Video file is that my pc doesnt have enought storage space for me to process those that are already in the nas hence i may try renaming directly on the NAS.

Q1. If i have movies and tv series in the same folder i.e.

NAS>movies>John Wick>John Wick Movie 1
NAS>Movies>John Wick>The Continental 1-3

Would plex be able to differentiate them ? I have couple of such situation and was hoping to keep the series together not sure if it would work?

Q2. There is this system information file generated when I use TMM to rename the movie folder and files, do you know what is that for ?

The .nfo files? You can delete those. They are text files with movie info. Plex will read them, but only the IMDB/TMDB ID. It ignores everything else.

To stop TMM from creating them, Settings → Movies → NFO Settings. Uncheck every box there is.

  • No mixing movies and TV shows in the same library. It will not work and will cause headaches.
  • Plex uses information from IMDB and TMDB for movies.
  • Plex uses information from TVDB and TMDB for TV shows.
  • Plex DocumentationYour Media

Name things according to Plex documentation and as they exist on those web sites.

Incorrect: John Wick Movie 1
Correct: John Wick (2014)

There are multiple Continental movies and TV shows. Follow the same process for those.

Will Plex recognize them? Give it a try and see what happens. Worst case is it does not and you have to separate them.

ah ic! ok but if i delete them and disable them in the setting, how would Plex find the TMDB ID from my file ?

Plex matches based on file name.

The majority of the time, the movie name and year provide enough information for Plex to match the movie.

There are occasions that does not work, such as when two movies have the same name and are released in the same year.

When this happens you can add the TMDB or IMDB ID to the movie file and folder name*. This will tell Plex exactly which movie to match.

The Plex documentation has the syntax. Also, see my earlier post with TMM renaming patterns.

* For TV shows, add the TMDB or TVDB ID to the show folder name. See docs for exact syntax.

Noted on the Documentation will rename accordingly.

Q. As advised I tried linking a small folder to plex to test the files i have edited, however i faced an issue where i am unable to link my movie folder as it cannot be found. see attached for the screen shot of both plex and my nas folder

When PlexMediaServer can’t see into a folder on a Synology NAS, it’s because it doesn’t have permission to (Linux is strict about enforcing permissions)

ALSO, I advise extreme caution about having the PlexMediaServer shared folder network mounted on your computer.

DSM 7 PlexMediaServer is fragile. You can easily break Plex if you do anything in there incorrectly (modify permissions, use a Windows Text Editor on a Linux text file, etc)

You’re safer and better off using the Synology FileStation and Text Editor

Thanks Chuck for identifying the issue.

With regards to plexmediaserver on my shared drive, its because I Map the whole NAS to my PC so all folders seem to be populated on my pc, i dont really put anything into plexmediaserver folder as advised by you guys.

The PlexMediaServer is installed in Hardisk1
Videos 1 is installed in Hardisk 2
Videos 2 is installed in Hardisk 3

Q1. Where do i grant the permission to plexmedia server ? could you briefly guide me through so I can test if it resolve the problem ?

Is this considered that permission is granted ?

What concerned me is you specifically have a mount for PlexMediaServer.
(or am I reading that incorrectly? It looks like the Network Folder symbol. – apologies if I am)

Having each volume mounted is fine. Having one for PlexMediaServer by name was the concern. It’s too easy to make mistakes when the shared folder is that easily accessible – Just sharing a caution based on lots of experience.
