Hi Chuck, i think ive missed this step out previously, but looking back at video 1 folder i realised i didnt grant plex access either, but i was able to located the folders within. i am so confused.
Sometimes you get lucky. There are no guarantees.
If the file you’re pushing to the NAS has “Everyone -Read” then it works for Plex too.
If not set that way – it fails
When you set the permissions officially, then you know .
All these permissions are driven by ACLs underneath at the filesystem level control by DSM.
Plex only needs READ permission. (safest)
If you want Plex to optimize media, then read/write – OR – write to a separate shared folder so as to protect your original media from accidental deletion with Read-Only.
Thank you for your guidance and advice, I learnt alot and feel like i am 1 step closer to set up Plex!.
I have a question related to Synology nas not sure if you guys can advise me on.
Q1. I have 4 Bay Nas currently its not running raid i think its Raid0 where there is no redundancy.
Storage Pool 1 contains Volume 1
Storage Pool 2 contains Volume 2
Storage Pool 3 contains Volume 3
Storage Pool 4 contains Volume 4
In Volume 2 Contains my Hd Movie 1 Folder ( Where most of my movies are)
in Volume 3 Contains my Hd Movie 2 Folder ( Because my Hardisk 2 has ran out of space I need to create another folder to hold the new movies)
in plex when I link the folder i need to link seperately Hd Movie 1 & Hd Movie 2 because they are from a different location.
Is there any way for me to link to location to 1 tab in Ple i.e HD Movies but is files from 2 different location ?
This is where you run into trouble with 4 independent volumes – when one fills.
When you make a RAID volume (SHR works great), you end up with “One BIG HDD” volume
You lose some space due to the parity / protection against HDD failure but now have that protection you won’t lose content if a HDD does fail.
This is one of those “Do the math first” and see what works best.
See if the loss of space initially is worth what you gain.
Here’s my development system: 4 HDDs in 2 volumes. It easily could be 4 HDDs in 1 volume for more space but I need it this way for development.
SHR/SHR2 are great. I just had a 9 year old disk failure the other day on my SHR2 array, the hardest thing about fixing it was deciding what kind of hard drive I wanted to use for the upgrade.
Sorry for the late reply I couldn’t post for the next 9 hours because I recently join the forum and there was the limit of the number of post.
I see the benefits of SHR from your above explanation and would like to try it however my hardisk now are configured that way.
Q1. Can I switch from basic to SHR without reformatting or removing my files ?
Q2. Currently my hardisk are 4TB which are from my old NAS, it would be expensive to change all to 17/18TB was thinking of changing it one at a time, would I still be able to plug out 1 hardisk (Hardisk 4 which is unused) to replace it ? would different sizes affect SHR or NAS operation ?
Q3. I am trying to tidy my tv shows and followed the naming guide but there is 1 part i am unsure which format should i rename see below for the 2 option.
Friends (1994)/ Friends Season 1/ Friends (1994) S01E01
Friends (1994)/ Season 1/ Friends (1994) S01E01
Q4. For Special episode which is the correct format for special and Season 0?
Friends (1994)/ Friends Special/ Friends The Reunion (2021) Special E01
Friends (1994)/ Friends Season 0/ Friends The Reunion (2021) S00E01
Friends (1994)/ Season 0/ Friends The Reunion (2021) S00E01
Plex uses episode ordering from TMDB and TVDB. TV Show episodes, including specials, should match how it is listed on those sites.
The two sites sometimes differ on how episodes are listed. When this happens, you can tell Plex which order to follow: Edit the show (pencil icon) → Advanced → Episode Order. You can choose TMDB Aired, TVDB Aired, TVDB DVD, or TVDB Absolute.
Specifically regarding Friends:
Friends: The Reunion (2021), it is a movie and belongs in a movie library (TMDB, IMDB).
You can add it as a Special if you wish. However, it cannot conflict with any of the specials listed at TMDB or TVDB. This means you will have to give it a high episode number (ex: s00e99), and it will be listed by the episode number, not by name.
The believe the guide states this :
Friends (1994)/ Season 1/ Friends (1994) S01E01
just that all the other folders i had was with the name and season together so wanted double confirm.
Q1. For Subtitle can put it in a folder like this
Friends (1994)/ Season 1/ Subtitle/Friends (1994) S01E01.SRT
or
Friends (1994)/ Season 1/Friends (1994) S01E01.SRT
Together with the video file ?
Q2. for TV Shows do i need to put each video file in their own folder ? or just all in the Season 1 folder ?
If you follow the documentation, it will work 99% of the time. There is always the occasional movie or show that gives Plex trouble, but they are the exception, not the rule.
Remember, if you try something and it does not work, nothing bad happens. Plex does not delete the files. Flames do not shoot out of your server. Worst case is you try something else and maybe have to Plex Dance the files.
Plex docs have examples for both movies and TV shows.
External subtitles must be in the same folder as the media file.
Add the appropriate language tag to the file. Otherwise, Plex will display the languauge as “Unknown.”
The subtitle file must be named exactly the same as the media file, except for language and other tags.
Many people keep resolution, codec, etc info in the media file name. If you do so, it must also be in the subtitle file name. Place such info inside square brackets at the end of the file name.
Thanks for the detailed explanation with pictures, i need some time to absorb it, but thanks you for taking the time to explain to me, i appreciate it.
Q1. I didnt know synology have such a calculator, is it installed default in the synology nas ?
Q2. SHR1 vs Raid i thought they are different, i recall seeing them during the formatting process.
Q3. Can i just like adjust the setting on the hardisk to switch to SHR1 / Raid and let it configure all the hardisk or i need to like move all the files out reformat the hardisk to the mode.
Subtitle just leave it in the same folder tier as the video file and not into another folder subtitle.
follow the naming convention especially for the language 2 or 3 characters.
Q1. I do have problem with game of thrones tvshows. i tried renaming it to the format and adding to plex but it doesnt seem to appear. for movies that i added it automatically appears like the moment i switch over to the window.
Assume at some point you will have to shuffle files around and reformat the drives.
You can convert from Basic to RAID 1 and from RAID 1 to RAID 5.
You cannot convert from Basic or any RAID to SHR.
Correct.
Scan the library so Plex will pick up the changes after renaming/reorganizing.
If that does not work, then Plex Dance the entire show.
If that does not work, then provide a directory listing, screenshot, etc showing how the files are named and structured. Include the folder added to the TV show library.
It should work like any other show.
/TV Shows
/Game of Thrones (2011)
/Season 01
/Game of Thrones (2011) s01e01 Winter Is Coming.mkv
I’ve tried the plex dance i do see plex searching the gam of thrones library where there is activity, but it doesnt populate it. i tried delete and read data source but it doesnt seem to work either. Am I doing something wrongly ?
