Woo-hoo! Thanks for your help. I have been struggling with this since PMS 1.24.5.5173 at the beginning of November. Something changed in the way the server interacts with the Web Player with the “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback" enabled.
PMS 1.25 did introduce the newer FFmpeg and transcoder architectural changes so this might have something to do with it. I don’t really think there is much need for the alternate streaming protocol anymore. I’ve never had to use it.
Yeah, I switched it on and forgot about it. But in troubleshooting here, I asked myself why do only a few people see this issue? And I thought to myself settings! This particular “experimental” option seemed a likely suspect. Looking back (you know, hindsight is 20/20) I should have reset all the options to default when I started looking into this :-\ I hope this is the source of the problem for other folks struggling with the live tv session has ended problem on Plex Web. Looks like I can run the latest server version again…yay!
I just check, because I’m pretty sure PMS 1.24.5.5173 was the first with the problem. And look what I found in the release notes…hmm, didn’t you mention this earlier? Maybe they broke Plex Web with “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback" ON when they fixed a similar Android issue?
(Playback) Some requests were failing causing Live TV streams on Android to get interrupted.
Yea, that’s when the web client started having this issue, after Android was fixed. This should fix it for everyone else too so it will be good to know that nobody has to wait 6 months for them to fix it haha.
Haha, I wish I could find magic switches to solve a few other problems.
Which problems are you talking about?
Mostly time shift issues with Live TV & DVR.
wow !
Thank you for handing me this on a plate. Well Done
I have reproduced the problem with BBC1 channel - for some reason the issue did not arise with the ITV1 channel
I will now refer your diagnostics and mine to the Plex Web development team
Thank you once again
Merry Christmas to all
Merry Christmas!
Are you using https://app.plex.tv/web or https://localhost:32400/web to start the web app?
You would have to clear browser cache or use incognito mode.
Since the version included with the Server(localhost) lags behind the Plex hosted(app.plex.tv) the fix isn’t there.
You are replying in a thread that was marked solved so I wouldn’t expect any attention from a Plex Employee. If you still have an issue try to find an active thread.
If the problem persists - when using latest Plex Web version (https://app.plex.tv/desktop) , would need debug server logs and I think also since it is reproducible for you, to get browser dev console verbose network logging (through F12) and downloading the har file
The har file would have tokens so needs to be sent zipped by Private Message
Please indicate when the session was ended
Example screenshot of browser dev console network logging
Last longer than the desktop app but still errored out.
Whilst the fix of the root cause for this is still being worked on - and will be in a future version of Plex Web, the 1.25.5 Plex Media Server beta that came out today does have a change that should circumvent the problem

Thanks. Yes, indeed, the Playback Error is gone now with “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback” enabled. A nice side-effect of having alternate streaming enable is that it resolves the audio stream issue I described in https://forums.plex.tv/t/ongoing-bug-plex-web-4-50-1-thru-v4-62-1-audio-stream-bug-now-fixed-in-v4-64-3/680752.
Is there a fix for this yet? Seems like a lot of people have this problem, but never been a fix. I want to use the Plex App on the Mac, not use the apps.plex.tv web app which is the only thing that has the ‘work-around’ available. “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback” doesn’t show up when in the Plex App for the Mac. From the WebApp if I enable “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback”, it just spins. I never get any video.
The original issue of DVR Live TV playback stopping after few minutes was actually also resolved by a change to Plex Media Server - so there would be no need to use the alternate protocol
I do have one open issue at the moment where playback of DVR Live TV stops after some time - could be an hour or so
I suggest you get diagnostics - using the current version of the Plex for Mac app
1.43.3.2951-1d73e3f3 and get server and app logs and indication as to when the issue arose and which channel
Having the exact same issue. “Plex for Mac” app (not iOS) is literally unable to play any channel stating error “This live TV session has ended”
Yet it works perfectly on the iOS or web portal…
Come on Plex, Live TV as it stands is a total mess…
This particular problem has been solved. Best for you to start a new post for your player and server platform/version.
