"Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost"

Hm, my logic was that it must be the router then! How many routers have been a problem for you?

Too many to count. But here’s a few. Top one being the best last one being the worst.

Google Wi-Fi
Nest WiFi
Asus AX11000

Netgear ax12
Netgear ax8
Did not work well at all,
Asus ac3000
Asus ax6000
Asus 5400
Asus 5300
Linksys 5400
TP Link ax 6000

As I said I tested quite a few. All them work better when connected to a network switch unmanage and not connected directly to the port in the back of the router. Also disabling the new video player works better.

That’s a real head scratcher. I’m gonna keep investigating.

I agree with Tehsquishmeistr/Dent/Albertcard…

In reference to all vids/movies not playing and receiving the “Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has* been lost”

I have an NVidia Shield with the Plex app. Tried all types of settings without success. This issue seems to be, and started with the new Video player within Plex that was released. The only way I could change it on my Nvidia Shield was remove Plex patches and re-install them. Doing that triggered two screens again that ask for the enabling of Plex’s new Video Player (I selected disable this time) and audio pass thru ( I selected enable as usual). After this disabling of the new Plex video player, I can play all my movies from the server normally as I had before. I suspect this new player is causing issues for other sticks and players on top of existing unaddressed Plex issues…for months now.

Plex support, DevOps where are you???

If the Plex team doesn’t pause development and spend a significant amount of time on bugfixes, the app is going to be considered unusable by more users than they can afford. The internet is already abuzz with suggestions of moving to Jellyfin or Emby.

In other words, if the goal of the Plex team is to have as many people as possible using their product, they’re slipping, and there is going to be a dramatic fall if something doesn’t change.

I had the exact same issue which started recently. I solved this issue with Plex for Android on my Sony Bravia X950G TV the following way:

  1. uninstalled Plex App
  2. restarted TV under Settings -> Device Preferences -> About -> Restart
  3. installed Plex App

Now the Plex app works as expected. My TV automatically updates all the installed Apps on the TV so I’m wondering if this was a specific issue related to the Plex App not properly updating.

I’m having a lot less occurrences of this problem recently, since the last update I haven’t has a single instance,
FireStick Plex app now at 7.25.2…1287
Settings other than default:
H.264 maximum: Disabled
New Player Enabled: No

Server (Win10): 1.18.4.2171

I’ve been struggling with an issue related to this for weeks now and finally narrowed it down. I have a shield tv and with the new player enabled, it can’t play anything with Japanese set as the audio track. If its English or unknown everything works fine. I hope this can get fixed soon.

Hi there,

I am Starting to have it with plex and all of their errors… I am finding myself spending more and more time in trying to fix a ■■■■■■■ problem then have a movie night With my wife! (Wife: “what is going on? every time we want to watch something there is a problem”)

I AGREE!!

@Voth24 you mentioned Jellyfin & Emby,
Any recommendations? I want to try one of them.

Thank you

I personally recommend Jellyfin, although you might have to jump through some hoops to get it working on a Roku device for the time being. It’s relatively new, but it’s pretty awesome and open-source.

Thanks for your fast replay
for me - i don’t have a Roku device. so i am good to go

I’m seeing the same error on my Android TV (Sony X950F). It happens randomly when I try to skip forward on Live TV. I disabled the new player a couple of weeks ago.

I haven’t seen the issue on my Fire TV stick, but I don’t use it much.

I’ve been having the same issues forever, went thought the entire forum for a “fix”, tried all of them and nothing seems to work, Plex is a joke and their support team is even worse. Thanks for losing another one, you guys are the worst support team!

I had this problem with my android plex client when accessing it from local network with HEVC. All other clients worked fine and also remote connections worked with android. I have TP-Link router running OpenWRT.

I solved this issue by adding address plex.direct to domain white list on my router settings (On GUI: Network --> DHCP and DNS --> General settings -tab --> Domain whitelist). I think it is worth a try for other routers as well. I hope this helps!!

Open the Plex app and goto settings > advanced > turn “enable new video player” OFF.
That did it for me and i can play all my vids again :slightly_smiling_face:

Same problem here for me, using a mibox s, I was getting the error on a lot of files mainly DTS7. 1 and HVEC files after changing settings in android sound settings and changing the settings in the Plex app I can get a few of them to work but some still don’t. One thing I have noticed if there is a secondary audio track sometimes it will play with that setting but all of this jumping through hoops is getting annoying and not making the wife and kids happy…

This helped for me. Not sure why, but thanks.

I’m so annoyed with this error.
Nowadays, when I want to watch a movie I don’t know whether my attempt would be successful or not.
I have MiBox S connected to my TV. Also, I have 4 android phones and 3 laptops. Everything works almost smoothly on the laptops (both in Windows clients and web). However, android phones and MiBox S are unpredictable. The same movie can be played or not depending on the Moon phase. It can be played on one device and, at the same time, can show error on another (which is the same model). Clearing app cache, reinstalling doesn’t help every time.

Hey, DEVELOPERS! Stop annoying your users! I’m thinking about completely changing the streaming platform that was absolutely amazing for so many years!

Thanks. :grinning:

The App updated mid video and booted me out. Wouldn’t play anything. I followed your advice and turned off the new player and everything is working fine again. looks like the Latest update broke the New Player.

Yeah same thing just happened to me, app just updated on my FireTV and nothing would play, until I stumbled on this and turned off the new player.
