I just downloaded VLC Media Player on my Android. Then went into the Plex ‘Advanced’ settings and ‘Player’ and checked the ‘Use External Player’ box. I then went to play media that previously wouldn’t play and it played.
Oddly, when I play all my content locally using the default Plex settings, it plays just fine. It’s when I switch to remote playing on my device that I noticed the issue popping up. Switching the player on remote playing helped.
Add me to the list for broken users. Shield and android as per everyone else’s too.
Will try switching shield to old player later today.
Getting pretty fed up of bugs like this now. And clearly plex support don’t care, even after 620 odd replies to this thread. Emby is indeed looking tempting.
Same issue on newly bought Mi Box S.
Reinstalled seemed to work, however higher bitrate movies would still produce this error until I turned the “new plex player” off.
edit: nevermind it’s not working again
can’t believe this is still going on. has plex not given any response?
anyway, i downgraded from the latest from play store version (7.26.0.14578) to the infamous 6.12 apk and low and behold, everything works. able to direct stream high bitrate 1080p without fuss.
Ok so it seems to be working when I login with my account (server admin) but it does not work for my spouses account, it also does not display any libraries for her after linking the account, I need to reboot the device for libraries to appear (playback still not working).
Note that everything is working for her fine on other devices/players, except for this android tv.
I think an update on the client was released in the last 24 hours. Videos i was able to play yesterday give error today, i can play majority of the video on the shield tv. The ones i cannot play give no problem Using the plex app on the ipad so it is unlikely that it is plex server problem i think.
As this thread has been going for some time, can anyone attest to how frequently they find this happens with updates? And how quickly it is resolved.
I’m a former long time user of Plex with a hiatus for a couple of years as my microserver blew up. I’ve just spent the afternoon building another server from scrap parts and configuring only to run into this problem. I can stream to my phone, but not my shield, as I am encountering this error. Its a bit of an anticlimax tbh.
Reverting to the sheilds initial version of Plex allows playback and will have to do for now, but the UI is years old and I wonder how many times I’ll have to use this workaround, and if it’s better to proceed with other tools.
I’ve only seen this error on plex app for android tv, so far it is working fine everywhere else:
hisense plex app
web browser player
plex app on iphone
android app on tablet (stopped working after update to 7.26)
LG tv plex app
plex for kodi on vero 4k+
How to do it is dependent on the router you own. Mine is a Linksys WRT32X based on OpenWRT. I used SSH and modified the following file with the following line:
/etc/config/dhcp
list rebind domain ‘plex.direct’
Some routers may have the ability to do this directly in the GUI.
I’m getting this error, under the following circumstances:
Client is on same LAN
Client is an Android device (both phone and Shield TV have the problem)
Client does not support audio format
Router (Linksys WRT1200AC) is running OpenWRT (32400 forwarded, UPnP on)
The weird thing is that remotely, these clients play files without issue! And playing the same file in Firefox on my desktop (same LAN, audio transcode also needed) is not an issue!
However, I can fix it by rolling back to the factory firmware on my router. That firmware also has UPnP on and 32400 forwarded to my server.
I’m not sure if this is a different problem altogether. If so, I apologize. But anyone got any ideas for me?
I’ve found that my router plays a big role in this issue. Having it on a network switch unmanaged works best. Also I’ve tested every single consumer router and found that Nest wifi or Google Wi-Fi work best. Followed by Netgear.
Individual results May Vary but my connection is a direct to ont fiber optic. Which most routers for some reason start to mess up.
