Unfortunately doesn’t appear to have worked for me, still immediately “an error while attempting to pay this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app”. Turning “enable new player” off is the only thing that works for me.
Very concerned about the new update for android:
Plex for Android 7.30.1
Available on Google Play and the Amazon App Store .
NOTE: We are performing a staged rollout, which means the update may take a day or two before it becomes available.
WHATS NEW:
- Player: the new player is now our default player.
^^^ hoping that doesn’t mean the option to turn off is gone! Otherwise, we’re screwed.
I have an Nvidia Shield that recently updated to 7.30.1. The option to turn off the new player is still available. I would advise turning off auto updates until they sort this out.
Any clue when us FireTV users will be getting the update 7.29 release is absolute garbage
Amazon are often quite late in pushing updates out.
You can download it from Plex and sideload it here: Release Announcements - Android TV beta.
Finally have it partially working by not allowing the new player. But now it somehow disconnects from the “wired” Internet connection.
Yes, I did that, so now when There is an update beyond what I’ve side loaded will it auto update or am I sideloading forever now?
Option is still there to turn off the new player for those concerned
At last I was able to make it work for me, partially by accident while meddling with settings for other reasons. I just noticed that all my plays on dashboard appear as remote, have not spent much time on that earlier as I’ve just enabled max quality for remote and ignored it.
However today I’ve configured local ip/netmask for network settings in plex, and I am not sure what other combination of settings might affect this, but after reinstalling plex app on android tv it seems to be working fine for the first time in few months.
For reference these are my settings that I have experimented with various values/combinations before finally it began to work.

This “was” fixed for me and now it is back. This time on my 2017 Shield. Even with the new player disabled. Most things play, but anything recorded with my HDHomeRun Extend using h.264 will not play. Down to downgrade… again… Ugh!
I just figured out a workaround for those of us with HDHomeRun Extends recording using h.264. Under Advanced Settings, change the the H264 maximum level from the recommended 5.2 to 3.2. The Plex client must be reading the H264 profile of these recordings incorrectly.
Plex team, I am running the latest beta client 8.0.0.17234-beta arm64v8a on Nvidia Shield TV with the latest Shield Experience 8.0.2, the latest server beta 1.19.3.2740-add6f438d on Synology DSM 6.x (Intel x64), and recording these files with Plex Live TV & DVR using HDHomeRun Extend with the latest firmware 20200225 using “heavy” transcode profile.
For me, I have turned off all of the “Max quality” settings for remote players and set to something like 10-12mbps… that sucks but is a reality.
For the audio, I found in the Android settings I could force audio down to 200-300mbps… this solves everything for me except EAC 5.1. All other TrueHD, DTS, etc seem to now work fine. I read somewhere that the tv itself can’t play this bitrate (???) but frankly 85% of my library now works with these settings.
Really sucks.
Hi all!!
Forget changing any settings other than turn off secure connections in the Network side of the Server and all your Android devices via WiFi on both Local and Remote will play videos once more!!
Hope this helps???
Dave
I might have found something. Would appreciate some of you to test your results.
Enable on Server “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks”
Enable on Client “Enable New Video Player”
Restart Plex client/app
Attempt playback
This seemingly has fixed the issue with playback on the new client for me on both my Shield and Android phone.
It occurred to me that I have access to 2 servers, mine (external) and a friend’s (external)… My didn’t work… My friends did. It has to be something on the server. Its not local.

I’ve had that server setting selected all along. I still get client playback errors - not very often, but often enough to be annoying.
I’ve played multiple times on multiple devices with New Video Player enabled since setting Auto Select Audio yesterday and it’s been flawless. I’ve never had it work for this long.
