"Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost"

Thanks for the tip! After trying everything I turned the new payer option off and my movies play again!!!

After a quick look at your logs your server is having issues accessing the cache whenever it can’t do a direct play.

02-15 09:49:01.632 i: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [DemuxerPipeline] Failed to open cache.

I have been having the same issue with the playback failing on 2 out of 3 Fire TV (one Fire TV 1st gen, one Fire TV stick 1st gen and 1 Fire TV stick 2nd gen) devices but working on everything else (android phone, pc and surprisingly the same TVs via DLNA). I tried to alter the audio bypass and the Dolby digital plus settings on the Fire TV and sticks putting the pass-through to HDMI and the Dolby digital plus to HDMI allowed the files to play but with no sound, (one step forward two back right!). I then took the one fire TV stick (2nd gen) that was working and moved it to another TV and it stopped working so I believe it is something to do with Dolby digital plus on the TVs (all three a Samsung but the two not working are over 5 years old). However on the old TVs I was able to play all the files via Emby which I took a trial of but don’t like the look which is frustrating as I have a lifetime Plex pass a got years ago and never regretted until recently. The issue is only appearing on files with audio of E-AC3 not AC3 so I tried recoding one of the files from E-AC3 to AC3 and success the file played, so I have a work around but surely the devs can fix this issue it can be done on other services.

This issue has been around for over two years. They aren’t going to fix it. Use v6.12 of Plex or Jellyfin instead.

Ok, but why only with new player on? And how do I go about fixing that? Thanks for taking a look BTW.

Definitely won’t use Jellyfin tried that and it never worked should have been a nice easy piece of software as I had tried emby and they are the same software but Jellyfin never found the server on the same network. Simply switching to the old player works fine

The only problem is on Android phones/tablets, you cannot turn off new player. And the FireTV and other devices, you will be forced to use the new player at some point, then what are we going to do?

For the last 2 years Plex has been using their crippled version of Exoplayer on Android. They know exactly what the issue is.

I have a way to fix this problem on Android tablet ( samsung tab s2)

I just went to download older versions from the top of the list and at last plex version 7.25.3.14365 (arm-v7a) worked as well!

You shall download the right architecture for your own android.

I hope that will help someone

@kqmaverick, any update on why this is happening?

I am not familiar enough with the Linux setup, maybe someone who is can help with whatever changes need to made to the cache directory.

Do you know anyone? Sorry, just wish i could figure this out.

Anyone knows how to do that on asus wrt? Have not tried yet as I have no access to home network at the moment, but I don’t recall any whitelists for dns in the gui.
edit:
found it on plex docs, hoping to try this when I’m at home:

DNSMASQ

To allow secure connections to work correctly on the local network if you are using “dnsmasq” with DNS rebinding protection enabled, you will need to add the following line to your configuration file (the “advanced settings” box in DD-WRT):

rebind-domain-ok=/plex.direct/

p.s. however how would that explain that my android tv plays videos fine for one account and not another…

edit2:
plex.direct did not help
disabling new player also has no effect
still only able to play with one account and not another.

I’m having the same issue…
I have a new Android Sony x950g with Android 8 and Plex installed (Plex updated). Whenever I stream any movie from my local network (PC with Win 10 running Plex server) and try to show Plex controls (Pause, Rewind etc.) while direct playing a movie, it throws up “Error, Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost. Please ensure the server is available and retry.” Checked the console and found: Message: Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 3543273737 bytes: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." If I bring up the controls at the very beginning of the playback, there’s no problem but after a minute, if I bring them up, it crashes. Tried the following:

  • Changing the new media player to the old one
  • Tried over Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet
  • Restarting the Plex server
  • Subtitles disabled
  • Tried on Nvidia Shield TV, no problem with crashes but I’ll return it because there are other issues with it.

Any solutions yet? Thank you

I have an Android Sony TV and ended up just using a Fire TV Stick 4k. It has been better than the Android portion of the TV.

Same problem for me, with 3 different Fire TV… It starts ti happen some days ago :frowning:
Also with Plex App, in the Android Mobile

Check if your “Terminate Sessions Paused for Longer Than” is different of zero in your network options in the plex server. I found that making zero fixed the problem in my end. It is possible that it could be something else in your case, but it doesn’t hurt to check.

I check, thanks

Great! It seems it works  thanks!

Cool, that “Terminate Sessions Paused for Longer Than” option is broken. I hope Plex fixes soon.
