Playback Issues of MKV Files on Latest Update

Server Version#: Version 1.25.9.5721
Player Version#: Plex Web 4.76.1 (and Nvidia ShieldTV)

Since upgrading to the latest Plex Media Server, I’ve noticed some of my MKV movie files (1:1 rip of Blu-ray) no longer play on my Nvidia ShieldTV or Plex Web Clients. Additionally, several of my MKV movie clips (< 5 mins) used for demo purposes now skip to several seconds into the clip instead of starting from the beginning. Furthermore, some of my MKV movie clips with Dolby Atmos tracks no longer output audio, however, my receiver is detecting the signal. Please correct these problems as some of my MKVs are now unwatchable. Let me know if you need specific files to test with as I have several examples that I can consistently recreate the issue across multiple clients.

Nvidia Shield: There is a very long thread on the topic: Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

The thread started with TrueHD problems but expanded to cover other Shield TV issues.

TL;DR: Fall back to 8.30.2 or use the 9.1.latest beta release.

Instructions to sign up for beta releases are here.

If you prefer to sideload, you can find the 8.30.2 release in the Android TV announcement thread and the latest beta in the Android TV Beta Release Announcement thread. For the Shield Pro, use the Google Play (arm64v8a) version.

For additional information on sideloading, see this thread.

Plex Web: For playback problems with Plex Web, try enabling the alternate streaming protocol.

Go to SettingsDebug → Show Advanced. Check the box next to Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback and Save Changes.

Thank you for all the info! I signed up as a beta tester and installed the latest Plex beta release. Dolby TrueHD MKVs are now working on my Nvidia Shield. Back in business…for now!
