Server Version#: 4.22.2
Player Version#: Roku 3 Version 6.4 build 12 / Roku Premier / Plex android.
When playing my server from my Roku 3 and other devices in the house i am only able to play through remote and not local. I am connected to the same network. It will still work however, when doing it this way i am forced to use my remote quality settings on the devices that are set substantially lower then my local quality settings. Before it wasn’t an issue but now since moving into my new home the internet is less then ideal. I assume it is a setting that i am overlooking but i have been unable to determine the error. I have looked through all the forums i can find but i have ran out of options. I am not sure if it is relevant but i have under the recommendations of others already added my device ips to the “LAN Networks” and “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”. any input would be appreciated thank you,.
Do the network settings in Plex still match with the network in your new place?
If it doesn’t, Plex will assume the devices are on an external network and apply remote settings.
From Settings > Server > Network > LAN Networks:
If set, all other IP addresses will be considered to be on the external network and will be subject to external network bandwidth restrictions. If left blank, only the server’s subnet is considered to be on the local network.
If those settings are actually in sync with your network, you might want to double-check the network itself is properly configured. Occasionally users deploy WLAN access points within their home network and allow those to create a separate network inside your home network. If that’s the case in your setup, try to switch those access points into “bridge mode” (leaving local IP assignment to the router’s DHCP instead of having an own DHCP on the AP as well).
my lan network settings normally wouldnt have anything there at all. i added those today to see if it made a difference. im not to awful savy with this server stuff. i have never been able to play over local at this house or the last. im not sure about the bridge mode. should i set the passthrough mode to DHCPS fixed, dynamic, or manual? or am i in the wrong place…
Let’s not rush this, so we don’t make things worse
If it didn’t work without the settings in Settings > Server > Network… there’s no immediate need to use those settings and you might as well reset that to its default (empty) state.
As for your network…
do you have multiple such components (e.g. a router, connecting your home network to the internet, and one or more separate WLAN access points)?
are your devices using a wired or wireless connection?
when you connect to your router… does it show all those clients/players as connected / active devices?
As a short term fix you could set the remote playback quality settings for the Roku to Original or Maximum Quality
i have restored the network settings to empty since it did not make a difference before and after. they are now in the default state. i have a router modem combo from ATT BGW210. My desktop is connected directly to the unit via ethernet cable. all other devices are connected via wifi. All devices connected through wifi are able to access the internet fine. i have increased the resolution as a temporary fix however i have a very low MBPS and is taking most if not all of it.
update: i tested the stream device by connecting it with an Ethernet cable to the modem router combo and it still shows to be paying through “remote”. im not sure if that helps or is relevant. i only have the one access point.
Hmm… it’s certainly odd.
Do you haven an own DSL connection or is the BGW210 connecting you to a community network? Sometimes the internet comes “packaged” with the home in which case you can end up without your “individual” connection but have a shared internet access with all the apartments in a house (or even all the apartments / houses in a subdivision…
However… even such a scenario should have more of an impact on your setup being accessible from outside the home network… not necessarily inside your home network.
Edit:
According to the BGW210’s manual… do your devices all get an IP address from the gateway (like 192.168.1.x)?
from what i am told is that its my own and not shared. (it was the only redeeming quality of the internet in my area). i can disable remote access in from plex settings and nothing in my house will work. nothing is using the local oddly enough.
I’ve been searching a bit…
looks like you’re not the only one having issues with AT&T’s router and Plex considering your home network a remote connection. Well… not in all cases related to the router itself.
There’s one user who apparently ran into trouble because of some security software was messing with PMS’ communication inside the home network – as a result, Plex went through an indirect connection, passing the streams through the internet
(ignore the in-between posts about remote access) – does that ring a bell?
sounded similar but not the same unfortunately. i don’t have an antivirus installed ATM i am seldom on this computer for anything other then adding to my server (IKR no antivirus scary right). i did find a spot for DHCP Allocation on the router. specifing the devices ipv4 addresses giving the option for dhcp or ip allocation. at this point i am likely am completely barking up the wrong tree and just pulling random threads risking creating additional errors. im a unfamiliar with router settings so ill just look and not touch. being this is the opposite error that it seems most is having i feel like it is likely something simple that i am missing.
I appreciate you taking the time to assist me with this. Thank you
FIXED: if anyone is interested or experiencing the same issue you may have a “LAN networks” setting configuration error. upon further testing it shows that i was able to connect to local as long as my server and receiving devices were both using wifi only. if the server was connected through LAN then everything on my network would play remote. Fix located on thread Devices on local network are connecting as "remote".
