Just tried the 1.76.2 update
Guess What!
STILL DOES NOT FIX THE HANGING PROBLEM!
So back I go to version 1.46.1 which works.
It has been 12 months since I reported this problem. THAT’S RIGHT 12 MONTHS!
SFA help from Plex
NOT HAPPY!!!
just for completeness. This was and is not really working… I think i was just lucky. Sometimes i manage to start a stream for a few seconds. Sometimes an error pops up and after clicking retry it works for a few seconds.
I was euphoric at the moment, thinking i got it figured out and immediately posted what i thought fixed it. But it wasn’t then possible to watch something longer than a few seconds and it isn’t now.
other clients i have are all working fine (android tv, iphone and web)
also sometimes i get this error
there is also this guy Bug with Plex + HDhomeRun (Tv)
PLEASE. Is there something we can do for someone to look into this. I’ll happily provide new logs if it helps
Latest update (1.77.3) has still not fixed the hanging/Playback Error problem when attempting to watch Live TV.
Back to the last working version - 1.46.1
I’ve given up all hope of anybody at Plex getting off their fat arses and doing something about this bug.
Time to start looking for an alternative.
Anybody got any recommendations?
Mine is finally working. Tried it on 2 Macs (M1 Pro Macbook Pro and M2 Max Studio). Versions 1.76.2 and 1.78.2. macOS 14 on both. Server 1.32.6.7468.
Well it’s an improvement of sorts for me. Mac player 1.78.2.3975-c5bd0cbb , server 1.32.5.7516-8f4248874 now works sometimes., When it does work it takes 15-20 seconds to change channels which is a real pain. And then when changing channels it sometimes Playback Errors and after clicking on the ‘Retry’ button it sometimes works or it goes back to the guide.
It’s certainly not reliable.
Back to 1.46.1
Have you made the jump to Sonoma yet?
No. I’ll wait until the official release. Very much doubt that will be the answer.
Currently on 13.6 with a M2 Mac Mini which has the server and M1 Mac Studio.
As expected, updating to Sonoma was not the answer.
Have also tried the latest Mac player, 1.80.2
AND IT STILL DOES NOT BLOODY WORK!
Back to version 1.46.1
I have the same experience as you. LiveTV works with “Plex for Mac” version 1.46.1.3056-ab91bdc0. For every subsequent version, it fails and displays the error described in this post. I am on an Intel-based Mac running Sonoma (MacOS 14.0).
Plex player for mac crashes frequently for me as well when playing live TV.
How do I get 1.46.1? Thanks.
Back when this hanging problem started, over a year ago, I had previously downloaded and saved a copy of 1.46.1 from the Plex download site that I could use to re-install.
https://www.plex.tv/en-au/media-server-downloads/?cat=computer&plat=macos
I had been doing that with each update because there had been several previous instances of updates with problems, usually fixed with the next update. Having a local copy of the last previous working version to fall back on saved having to wait for the fix.
An alternative method when this problem first occurred was to use ‘Time Machine’ to retrieve the last working version. Do you have system backups?
I believe there was also a non Plex website which had copies of previous versions. - You will have to search back through this thread to find the details.
However the 1.81.0 update has finally fixed all my problems. The 1.82.1 update also works.
Give the latest update try by using Plex’s auto-update method.
i.e. The update downloads and is saved in the background whilst Plex for Mac is open. When Plex for Mac is closed and then reopened the update is applied.
ITS FINALLY FIXED!
The version 1.81.0 update when applied via Plex’s auto-update method has fixed the hanging problem. I have been using it for a week with no problems. Version 1.82.1 is also OK
Let’s hope that Plex don’t stuff it up again.
Meanwhile I will continue on keeping a downloaded copy of the last working version in case it happens again.
1.81.0 or .1 doen’t fix the issue for me. Glad it does for you. Seems to work sometimes for me but also crashes frequently.
All I can suggest is to post in the ‘Live TV & DVR’ forum. It was not until I also posted there that the fix happened, Coincidence? Maybe, or the Plex boffins noticed it.
You may also have to attach your Log Files

I had the same experience as you; Plex for MacOS v. 1.82.1.4022 also failed to stream in the same manner as earlier versions. However, it did function correctly after I installed the Beta version of Plex Media Server v.1.32.8.7639-fb6452ebf (November 1, 2023). YMMV.
