I received my TV tuner in the mail today and was disappointed to learn that I had to setup a separate server on my SHIELD just to access the TV function (my main server is on my PC). I understand why this is: to allow remote access and DVR functions, but not everyone needs those features. Some people just want to watch local TV without leaving the Plex app. I realize I can just use the Live Channels app but it would be slightly more convenient if I could just do it from Plex. Now, I have to switch between my PC server for stored content and my SHIELD server for live TV content.
I’m confused. For Plex DVR the tuner is supposed to be on the Plex Media Server (your PC). Not on the client. I don’t use a USB tuner, I use a card, but that’s how mine works.
You’re right in that’s how it currently works. My suggestion is just a simple QOL improvement. I have no need to install a second server on my SHIELD, I don’t need DVR or remote access for my live TV. I just want to be able to watch it (similar functionality to Live Channels) app.
Connect your tuner to your main server. Done.
My antenna is not located near my main server… so unfortunately it’s not done
Then do it right:
- send back that tuner
- order a HDHomerun instead
- run ethernet wire near your antenna (to keep the HF wire short and signal strong)
- place the HDHomerun at the end of the ethernet wire, near where the antenna wire goes into the house
Actually the whole reason I got the USB Tuner is because I don’t need network-enabled live TV. I just want to watch it from one device and it would be a little more convenient if Plex client supported it.
