Please help: connect external USB drive with my Plex media library

Hello, I am attempting to setup PMS on my SHIELD (from late 2018) for the first time. I have my PLEX media library on an portable USB hard drive, which plugged into one of the USB ports on the SHIELD. The PMS on the SHIELD does not seem to be able access the media files on the USB drive (i.e., I don’t see any of my movie/music files displayed like I expected on the Plex screen). Normally, when I select “More+”, then “SHIELD Android TV”, I should be able to see a submenu appear with “Movies”, “TV Shows”, Music", “Home Movies” etc. Instead, there is no submenu.

Furthermore, and this may be a separate issue, but while trying to debug this, I ran into some kind of “insecure connection” error message. (“Unable to connect to SHIELD Android TV securely.”) I read the support article at How to Use Secure Server Connections | Plex Support but I was unable to get to settings>server>network (per the instructions) because it shows that SHIELD Android TV is unavailable.

I would really appreciate any help to walk me through I need to do to (1) fix the insecure connection error and (2) be able to access my Plex library on the external USB drive.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I used this YouTube video when I set mine up. I have 2 external drives on mine, one for tv shows and one for movies. It was a bit of a learning curve as my previous setup was on my desktop PC.

This video helped me quite a bit.
Setting Up Shield With External Drives

Hi Arkwright, thanks for the video link. I’ve seen other videos by Lon Seidman. He makes excellent instructional videos. I followed his instructions on moving my media files to the NVIDIA_SHIELD folder on the external USB drive. I Plugged the USB drive in to the SHIELD, and no difference. I am unable to progress past that step in the video because, still, no sub-menus (Movies/TV Shows/Home Movies) show up under the SHIELD ANDROID TV entry. (In the video, he clicks on the Movies sub-menu, then is directed to the Plex web app to specify the location of the movie files. But since the Movies sub-menu does not show up, I am unable to proceed.) Unfortunately, he does not address this problem in the video.

So I still have the issues of not being able to see any of my media files on the external drive, and also the “insecure connection” error.
