plex server for windows.
When I attempt to reinstall it, it complains about there being another installation.
I have deleted so much in my registry, and about anything plex-related folder structures I could find.

I just experienced the same issue. I clicked to install the update and Plex Server is now completely gone. I haven’t attempted messing around with it yet.
Problem solved for me. Had to revert everything initially.
(since many people joke about old forum posts finding solutions and not showing them, ill put it out here for any other lost souls)
Go to add or remove programs, select plex media server, click modify, and click repair installation. That is what fixed it for me.
Sorry for the post, didn’t think i’d manage to fix it.
Yep I had the same problem and waited for hours for it to reconnect. When I finally decided to try and get out of it. I could not find Plex to restart it.
Great answer I did the same, Goto Program and Features, Right click on Plex and select change then choose repair. Works perfect now.
Can confirm that Repair works to quick and simply reinstall Plex.
Was baffled to find that Plex had completely vanished from my PC. I’ve occasionally awoken to it having stopped running overnight for whatever reason, but never to find it and all of its Program FIles folders had completely vanished!
Same issue for me last night. I was watching TV on the Live TV & DVR, and thought I’d get away with doing the upgrade during an ad break - that was the end of last night’s TV viewing!
Just managed to recover the situation thanks to the great advice here over my lunch break.
Had the same issue on 2 of my servers that had the update queued. Repair worked on one of them, waiting for the other to finish windows updates before I can test this on it too. Thanks!
Love when you need a quick restart and windows update decides to f you over…
Thank you! Had the same issue, repairing it also fixed it for me.
Interestingly, the current version to download with PlexPass is 1.24.2.4973 - I had to select 1.24.2.5000 (which was present in the default location/packages folder), selecting 4973 did not work.
As @HomeMediaServer2018 mentioned, Plex seems to have pulled the update.
I tried doing the repair option and picking a few different update packages but it fails every time. Nothing like waking up to find a program uninstalled itself
I’ve solved the problem another way. I’ve uninstalled any software with the name Plex in it from every device in my house. I’m now using a free alternative that is so much more reliable for the basics – you know, watching library videos, recording and watching TV, etc – the things that we just haven’t been able to rely on Plex for – for over a year now.
I no longer have to perform major research projects to direct play videos on all my devices that support it. I can easily schedule, record and watch any TV that I want and I can watch sports while it is still recording – all things that are painfully unreliable in Plex.
Same issue here, had to repair the install using the 1.24.2.5000 download that was waiting to be installed. Guess I’m going to disable the Plex auto update functions again…
Same issue here. Woke up this morning to find Plex not running and seemingly not present on the server. Can verify solution worked - open add or remove programs, select plex media server, click modify, and click repair installation. As others mentioned had to select to open the only file present in the 1.24.2.5000 update folder rather than the default pms.exe the repairer was looking for (which did not exist there). Seems to be running fine now. Thanks @pMuZy1000, likely saved me hours…
LEGEND! This cleared it right up for me as well. Do you have a Venmo or something? I’d be happy to buy you a (insert beverage of choice)! Seriously saved me from reinstalling from backups.
Thanks for coming to the Plex forum to let us all know. Since you aren’t using Plex anymore maybe it would be prudent to let the people in the “free alternative” forum know about the great experience you are having.
On an unrelated note, almost all of my devices direct play everything I throw at them and it didn’t take any “major research projects” to make this happen. Not sure which client you’re using but the experience has had a marked improvement over the past few years so is it really still an issue for you? If so, you can get a very inexpensive used CPU that will transcode multiple steams for almost nothing, maybe that would have been a good option for you? Of course it doesn’t matter now that you’ve switched…
This worked for me too but I had to select the .5000 installer to make the repair work. Once I did everything was fine.
I tried downloading the latest installer and installing over the existing installation but it wouldn’t let me install an older release (.5000 was pulled from the website) as Plex thought I had .5000 installed.
