Plex 2019 shield migrating to external drive (20 hours later not finished)

Server Version#: whatever the latest shield is
Player Version#: the latest player

Can’t get server logs as it won’t start - database is 7.1 gb

I started the move to external. After about 3 hours I went to check and accidentally stopped the transfer with a clumsy remote push. I restarted it and as titled it’s been going on 14 hours and it’s not finished. Meanwhile Plex won’t start.

I assume at this point it’s borked and I’m going to have to reset everything and rebuild everything? I know a user reported something like 4 hours to move 1.5gb but at this point, to a ssd with good write speeds, I’m guessing I’m stuck.

Any thoughts? Any way to recover the built info like thumbnails and intros etc?

Thanks all

Take the drive to a computer and see if the data got moved. A way to check is if you have PMS running on that computer or can install PMS, you should be able to point PMS to that drive and the data will load. Nothing will play since the media file locations are not correct, but PMS should load and show you your libraries.

If the data is there, then the app got stuck at the point of either confirming the data moved or deleting the old data.

  • still on the computer rename the Plex Media Server folder to something else
  • back on the Shield, clear the app data to start over (do not uninstall and install, incase there is an update, you want to keep the same version)
  • start PMS but don’t setup anything, just skip through the steps
  • reconnect to drive
  • move the data to the drive, this should complete in just a few minutes
  • stop PMS and disconnect the drive
  • back on the computer, rename the new Plex Media Server folder to something else
  • rename the old Plex Media Server back to Plex Media Server
  • reconnect drive to Shield
  • start PMS

This should be working now.

I wasn’t aware a drive partitioned as storage for a shield tv could be mounted on a pc. You sure about that? It’s not just an external exfat or whatever.

Given the amount of time I had into this already I reset the whole shield as it would be faster and my time to sort this out is limited. It’s is now repaired and running all the detections. But I’d sure like to get to the bottom of this as I think it will happen again.

I also don’t think it’s clear at all how Plex sees an external drive that has been formatted to work with a shield tv. I still only had the option of internal (user accessible) and as of now I have no idea if Plex has moved data to the expanded drive structure. Every other app sees the drive.

If all you did was connect the drive to the Shield, then it will be formatted however it came out of the box. If it was originally meant for Windows, then it should be NTFS, which is what you want.

If you had changed the drive to be adopted storage, then you are right, it cannot be mounted to a regular computer. If you reformatted the drive to be Ex-Fat, that may work if you installed the appropriate drivers. I know you can for Windows, not sure on Mac. Should just work on Linux.

I started the move to external.

I assumed you said External because that is what you chose. When choosing where to move the data, the choices are “Internal (User accessible)” or “External”. External means it’s just a regular drive you connected to the Shield.

If you look at that setting, it will say where the data is now.

I ended up having to redo the shield to solve this. It’s working now mostly, but the up front load time is not good, which I discussed in another thread. Thanks.
