Player Version#:Windows PC and Apple TV
I’m a Canadian working on contract in China.
My QNap NAS with the Plex Media server has worked well for several years.
About 2 weeks ago it was unable to find new meta data for added media.
Yesterday it started to cough up Playback Errors (on both PC and Apple TV): Conversion Failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.
I attempted to delete the codecs file from the QNap. It would not add new codec files when I stopped and started the Plex Media Server.
I attempted to delete and reinstall a fresh copy of Plex on the QNap.
It installed fine. Found the movie files. But could not find meta data for the files. Also it could not play the movies from PC or Apple TV.
I then managed to connect the Plex to the internet through a VPN (VERY temporary solution) and the codecs were able to be downloaded and I can once again play movies.
The meta data still would not download (It was a 1-2 MBps connection through a VPN to America)
I then reverted to the Plex Movie (Legacy) agent and I was able to find meta data for the movies. However it will not find the metadata automatically. I need to manually search for and add each movie. This is not a practical solution.
Having the QNap connected through a VPN is not a practical or reliable solution. I have researched and implemented an extensive list of hardware (“VPN router”) and software VPN “solutions” which have had varying success but none of which are 100% reliable. The current geopolitical situation has made almost every VPN unreliable.
Is it possible to have the Plex Movie agents and codec downloads moved to a web address that is not blocked by the great firewall? Several VPN organizations have implemented this solution.
