Plex Android does not advance to next episode, just reloads same episode and does not play

Issue is still present on 8.4.0.19098-beta.

Still having this issue on 8.4.0.19231-beta.

@bigwheel: I’m assuming you still have no idea what’s going on here? This has been pretty consistent for over two months now since around 8.0. Not sure what else I can do here to help, but clearly I’m not the only one with the issue.

Still a problem on 8.4.1.19323.

Sorry have not found cause yet.

Same issue here on Android TV box (Xiaomi Mi TV Box) using plex app version 8.4.1.19323.

See Logs here: Plex_Android_TV_Logs.txt (1.2 MB)

Same issue here on Shield, Fire TV and Fire Stick. Very odd its not all TV series have the issue. Thought maybe it was my server so moved a series to another server and it seemed fine for a few days then same thing started to happen. Doesn’t matter if you shuffle or watch it episodes in order. Will not advance to next episode. So started watching a series that i don’t watch alot and it advances to next episode for about two hours now.

It’s really sad, more than 2 month with those ā€œvery annoyingā€ bugs getting sometimes even worth, to only get this answer: ā€œSorry have not found cause yet.ā€ Plex is definitly not working on nvidia shield tv for ā€œautoplayā€ next episode with the new player since the arrival of ā€œskip-introā€ function. It’s been tested on 4 different nvidia shield models, including the new Nvidia shi*** tube404. Best regards

Same issues here running Plex App on Sony Android TV set. May be occurring on Nvidia Shield Pro box but have not done many multi-episode play back requests on the Shield Pro in a while.

Is everyone else seeing this sporadically? I’m always trying to find a pattern and there seems to be none. Sometimes it happens on the first (really second) episode, sometimes it’ll take a few, sometimes more. It’s not the files because I’ve never had this problem before 8.0 hit. But it blows my mind that Plex can’t reproduce. It’s clearly happening across quite a few Android devices. You just have to let things play and eventually it will happen.

How are the logs not capturing the exact moment it rolls to a new episode, but then just goes dark? I don’t get how this has gone on for 2.5 months and they still have no clue. What changed in 8.0? Was that when skip intro was introduced? I’ve never even used it, so I don’t know, but something regressed in that version.

Emby isn’t as nice looking but at least it works

I have the Nvidia shield 2019 pro and it happens randomly. Sometimes it’s all good then a random episode this issue occurs. I have the latest beta version installed, so will see if this issue continues

Problem not just when casting from Android, but getting the same when casting from Chrome to Chromecast. Server version 1.19.5.3112, no app version applicable

Can confirm that problem still exists with 8.5.0.19547-beta.

Going to try Emby, don,t’understand why Plex is not fixing this issue. Seems to be getting worse. I did noticed it only does it with TV shows, I can play a movie Playlist or shuffle a Movie Playlist and there is no issue. It will play all night.

Player update would fix many of these problems, incompatibility issues plauge the current player.

I voted here for player update.

Sony Android TV Version 8.0.0, security patch Jan 1 2020
Plex Android TV App Version 8.4.2.19372
Synology x64 App Version 1.19.5.3112

I’m having all of the same issues as noted in the OP.

In addition, if any episodes successfully advance with continuous playback until the failure occurs, pressing Back will send the viewer back to the episode page where playback started, with none of the progress recorded for the episodes watched.

What kind of information is needed to help resolve this?

I finally gave up hope and purchased a lifetime Emby premier license a few days ago after subscribing to the monthly plan for the last couple of months. I’ve only had one small issue so far and their support was very responsive and helpful. It’s nice to have software that actually works.
Plex may look a little prettier in some aspects, but at this point it’s like putting lipstick on a pig.

I have a lifetime Plex pass. I am not sure what I am seeing is exactly as described by others in this thread, but it must be related. On my Nvidia Shield, which is both the server and the player, it will play a video just fine, then it often plays the same file again, but with black screen and no sound. It counts off time just as if it were the first successful play of the video. If there are several video in a playlist, it will play them just fine, except with the silent black screen sometimes between videos.

Yup, that’s what we’re seeing. Somehow Plex can’t recreate this to fix it.
