Server Version#: 1.21.3.4021
Player Version#: 8.12.4.22902
Device: Chromecast with Google TV
Build Number: 200918.033
Security Update: December 5, 2020
Published: February 8, 2021
Chromecast with Google TV has the actual Plex client installed on the newly rebranded Android TV platform and the Google Cast protocol is not being utilized for playback here
Issue:
When manually selecting 2 identically encoded TV show episodes, they play just fine. However, when Plex finishes the 1st episode and attempts to autoplay the 2nd episode there is an error. The error message is “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”
Steps to recreate:
Restart Windows 10 (server host) and Plex Media Server
Power on Chromecast with Google TV and open Plex app
Select TV Shows > Show > Season > Episode (playback begins successfully)
After waiting for 10-15 seconds, scrub to the end of the TV episode to simulate a successful watch through until ~30 seconds are remaining
Wait until the episode ends to see the auto-play next episode screen successfully appear
Wait for the auto-play countdown to finish and observe the error message as mentioned above

Plex Web’s Dashboard reports that both TV episodes direct play successfully when I manually select them on the Chromecast with Google TV. That is why I’m confused with the behavior of auto-play here.
UPDATE 02-11-2020: The same behavior occurs on my NVIDIA Shield client as well. The logs were cleared right before my Chromecast with Google TV test and does not contain any information about the NVIDIA Shield attempt. I would love to know if the root cause is the server or if it’s both Plex clients running on Android TV.
I think I have the same problem with my AT&T TV Android TV device. See My Problem Report. Pretty much everything you describe is the same as mine, except you provided better details.
Sadly, a non functional advancement is a deal breaker for me so until this particular issue is resolved I’m going back to the Roku stick and check on the Android TV client every few days.
Happening here on fire-stick, but my android phone app is working. This happens on some shows but not all shows. The shows it does happen on it happens on all episodes. Happens on all my Fire Sticks, remove and reinstall plex app and no change.
Server - 1.22.0.4163 Ubuntu
Fire Stick App - 8.13.2.23227
Workaround: Install Kodi and the plex plugin. That works.
No work-arounds or info from the Plex crew??? This is happening with any older show I download. It’ll either error out or when the episode is over it goes black and starts a negative timer (starts at 0 seconds, then -1s, -2s, and so on) which will at least let me click “next” to go to next episode, when it errors I have to back out like was mentioned. This is killing me now cause I’ve been binge watching 90s shows but each episode I have to manually switch to, so ■■■■■■■annoying. SOMEONE FROM PLEX EXPLAIN AND HELP!!!
Good evening, even updating to the latest version of Plex Player on Android TV it is not possible to go to the next video, I am attaching the logs of my Android Box Zidoo X9S.
P.S .: I hid the server’s ip address
I honestly do not understand why no Plex employee joins the discussion, it does not seem right behavior, at least to reassure that the problem is under examination and will be solved, or if this is not the way to report the problem provide us with a valid way to report it, I was hoping that with this latest Player update the bug would be solved but it wasn’t, can a Plex employee kindly intervene to reassure us? Thanks
Expecting people from Plex to respond is a long shot. The open source nature of the project and the reliance on community support as the only support means basically only the sexy stuff is worked on, and bug fixes are not sexy. Projects by companies such as Microsoft and Apple have a more centralized and distributed means of dealing with bugs. Report is filed, reviewed, assigned to a team, than subset of the team of maybe only one or two coders who are assigned to correct the bug, then the fix gets reviewed for compatibility across the project and then implemented. The ways things work here it appears that someone who works on the code and hears about or notices a bug may decide if they care about it and may do something if it doesn’t interrupt their TV time.
The best we can do here is to continue to report that a bug continues to be a problem with every update made and not give up on reporting it. And to be thorough about what update we tested it on and the exact equipment and conditions.
On this particular bug I like to emphasize that it works properly on the Apple TV client. My hope is that someone will decide to look and see what is different between the Apple TV client and the clients this is an issue on.
I’m also having this issue, however I have noticed that things recorded with the dvr in mpeg2 in TS format auto-play, but stuff dvr recorded that got converted to hvec in MKV fail to auto-play.
Continuing on with the auto play problems that are plaguing the android client. The root issue as described in the OP and comments continue. Except I have also now noticed an extreme delay between the end of a show, and when the count down screen pops up (up to 30 seconds black), then after the count down the delay is longer than previously (around 15 seconds). This in on 8.16.0.24423. Tested with two identical Android TV boxes for AT&T TV. Noticing a similar delay on the Firestick but haven’t tested out that one much to confirm. And like several other people before me, things are working fine on Roku and Apple TV.
Maybe it’s time to focus some attention on correcting the bugs that already exists before spending an obnoxious amount of time making new features with new bugs. Just a thought.
