Does anybody else have issues with Amazon AppStore and Google Pixel 7a ? I can’t find and download the Plex App, while it’s still possible from my old Pixel 5.
As premium features were enabled with Amazon store, I don’t want to Switch to Google Play Store where the app IS available, but where I’ll need to pay to enabled premium once again.
However, it may not work if your phone is running Android 13 and definitely won’t work if running Android 14.
The Plex Android mobile & Android TV apps are 32-bit apps (armv7a is a 32 bit architecture).
The Pixel 7a has a 64-bit CPU. It runs either Android 13 or 14. Android 14 does not support 32-bit apps. I could not find any definitive info if a Pixel 7a running Android 13 will run 32-bit apps.
The Pixel 5 is old enough that it still supports 32-bit apps.
Note that sideloaded apps do not auto update. You will have to manually update as future versions are released. Also, you’ll be using the app in an unsupported method.
TBH, your best alternative is to switch to the Google Play store and pay the unlock fee.
I cannot install the Amazon Appstore app on my phone.
The Google shopping app shows Plex as a free install, but will not let me install it.
If I open the link to the Plex app in your post, using Chrome on my phone, it gives me the option to install on my Amazon Fire devices, but not on my phone (phone is not listed).
Everything I see online says Android 14 requires 64-bit apps.
The information on Android 13 is less definitive. The Pixel 5 shipped with Android 11, so it would support 32-bit apps when released. Wikipedia says it can be upgraded to Android 14. I could not find any info regarding running 32-bit apps on a Pixel 5 with Android 13 or 14.
Edit: I got the Plex app to run on my Pixel 6a. Tapped OK a couple of times to dismiss the pop-up messages, then relaunched the app. It let me login and I could play a movie. Did not test any other functionality.
Even though this seems to work, not sure I would do this long term.
Not sure this will work on later Pixel models. Info I found online say they are 64-bit only.
Running a 32-bit app on a 64-bit device & OS. Google might block this.
Due to update policies, Amazon app store updates lag Google store updates by days or weeks.
I found a way to install the Amazon AppStore on my phone. Plex is listed. I can download and install it. However, it will not run. It says “This app is not compatible with the latest version of Android…”
