Plex app stuttering on Win 11

Server Version#: 1.41.6.9685
Player Version#:1.109.0.329-ea562b95

I’m getting stuttering (looks like continuous low frame rate) playback on my Beelink EQ14 (Intel N150/16GB) when using the Plex Windows app and playing 4K (remux) movies.

The stream is coming from DS920+ (running plex server) over a gigabit ethernet connection.

Thinking it was some kind of hardware limitation of the PC or network problem I tried the following:

  • streaming to the same PC directly from NAS to VLC - works perfectly, no stuttering

  • streaming to the same PC via the Plex web app (in Chrome) - works perfectly, no stuttering (shows as direct play for both audio and video)

  • streaming to the same PC using the old discontinued Plex Media Player app - works perfectly, no stuttering (shows as direct play for both audio and video)

It’s only the standalone Plex app that doesn’t work. I tried a few things like disabling HW acceleration and direct play as some other (old) posts suggested, but no luck.

My conclusion is that it’s not my hardware or network causing the problem, but something within Plex app.

Any similar experiences or suggestions?

I love how you get all this technical support from Plex once you fork out $250… might have as well stayed on the free plan.

Yes. Windows player, multiple versions of it, multiple NVIDIA 2070 drivers. Anecdotal: started happening with last mpv update… Often worse when I move my mouse to reveal UI overlay. Voodoo workarounds: disable HW decode, quit+quit other apps+reopen, use Plex HTPC, finally: use LG app.
Really sad as no stutter for years before on same hardware.
Tried replacing mpv with the one from TrueHD thread, but only worked for a bit.

Sorry for no clear answer.

Just found I’m having this issue on an a 12500H laptop. Should be good enough to stream the DV/TrueHD film I’m wanting but it’s just constantly stuttering in the Plex for Windows app.

Here’s the kicker, the same file works fine in Plex HTPC, no stuttering or buffering issues at all.

What do you mean by “only for a bit”?

Can you please share your Plex HTPC logs?

Does the stuttering occur with framerate matching turned on? Does it drop frames?

As to the Beelink device, it’s probably too weak to play those files back with Plex. Plex does not use the default config for mpv… On “low-end” Intel iGPU devices, this is enough to make it stutter like a total mess. On my Intel Laptop (UHD620), it’s a total mess, even in normal mpv with 4K files…

Hi, thanks!

It’s been going on, on and off, for such a long time that every time I, again, decide to try to do something about it and it happens to not stutter, I’m like “wow, it worked!”. Until it does it again. That’s what I meant.

Sure. Here is a ZIP of playing one file (non HTPC Windows player, but HTPC also stutters) when it stutters from the beginning and another when it starts to (heavily) stutter when I move my mouse to reveal overlay.
stutter-hiccup.zip (24.8 KB)
You start the same file next time and it plays smoothly, though.

I have framerate match on (Enable Refresh Rate Switching). I also tried Monitor Technology: Fixed refresh in Nvidia settings, no luck.

It well may be my Windows machine, but I’ve tried just about anything I could find on the web since it started (no hardware changes) and nothing worked…

Have you tried the swapchain-depth=1 thing I quoted here? => Stuttering With New HTPC 1.70 Release - #20 by Mitzsch

I reviewed the logs you provided. Where are they sourced? These are not the application logs I need. You can find them here => “C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Plex\Logs”

Could you please provide these?

Hey Alex,

I’m having the same issues on the same machine that you have. I just did a post on that matter then I saw yours. I found why that BEELINK stutters and it comes from PLEX but I found no solution.
Here’s a link to my post, maybe you can read and see something that can help us:
