I think it is important to mention I have 3 TVs including a new LG. I have a ROKU TV that the Plex App works on without issue. I also have a regular TV with an Amazon Fire stick that Plex works on without issue – so far.
I recently had to purchase a new TV. I made sure that Plex was available for this TV. If it wasn’t available – that was a deal breaker. I settled on LG OLED65CXPUA Model.
After going through the set up I installed the Plex App and I then tried to play Avenger End Game. This is a Blu Ray rip that works on all other TV Plex apps. Only on the LG it only plays the descriptive audio. I was able to isolate the descriptive audio. If I rip it without the descriptive audio it plays the director commentary. If I rip it without both commentaries it plays in French. However, in Plex, it is showing as the DTS-HD MA Surround 7.1 english is selected. If I rip it with no other audio but DTS-HD MA Surround 7.1 English there is no audio at all. If I rip it with no other Audio than DTS Surround 5.1 English I get no audio. I have no more ideas. This is not the only movie that is having this same problem. I have seen similar problems on the forums but they are not quite the same. Any help would be appreciated.
In the Plex app, select your username, choose Settings → About. Current Version is 4.29.6.
Are you using the TV speakers or passing audio to a receiver/soundbar?
What do you see in the audio settings for the app? Is there a choice for dts audio? If so, unselect it and see what happens. It should force Plex to transcode the audio.
According to the online specs, LG does not support dts audio on their 2020 TVs (your model anyway).
This is a change for 2020. LG TVs in prior years supported dts audio. Plex may have to update the app for the 2020 models.
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I did not get a notification.
App Version:
Plex for LG 4.29.7
webOS 5.1.0
I am using the TV speakers.
So I went into the app settings and found the DTS option and unselected it. That seemed to have resolved the Issue. Good thing to. Most of my Marvel movies are like that. Thank you so much for your help.
I ran into the same issue, and I have the same TV (just bought it), and the same solution that @ctyler1 mentioned also works for me (going into Plex Settings > Audio and unchecking DTS (DCA)).
I also noticed that this problem was only happening on movies using a DTS audio track. So it’s very odd that disabling DTS (DCA) fixes it. It’s almost like there’s a bug and the DTS (DCA) setting is working backwards (checked disables it, while unchecked enables it).
Then I re-read @FordGuy61’s reply, and maybe he’s right and this is an issue with the 2020 LG models no longer supporting DTS. Odd that it starts working when we uncheck DTS (DCA). Maybe that makes the Plex LG app switch to another codec? Or maybe PMS is now transcoding the audio?
Thanks @FordGuy61. Yep, it was now transcoding the DTS-HDMA 5.1 audio to AAC.
But the plot thickens. This may still be a bug in the Plex LG app. When I re-enable the [Settings > Audio > DTS (DCA)] checkbox, a movie with DTS-HDMA 5.1 plays fine, but a movie with DTS-HDMA 7.1 plays no audio. I checked the Plex Dashboard and in both cases, it’s not transcoding, as expected.
So then I thought to go in the Plex LG app to [Settings > Video > Maximum H.264 Level] and change it from the default (and recommended) “5.1” to “None”. But this has no effect on the DTS-HDMA 7.1 movie; it still plays no audio. I wonder if the developers need to add a new option for “7.1” in this list?
Or maybe the missing DTS capabilities in 2020 LG TVs is only limited to DTS-HDMA 7.1, and not 5.1?
That is a video setting. It has nothing to do with audio. If you set it wrong it may force a video transcode. Put it back to where it was. Leave it alone. See Advanced Video Coding.
More likely that an update is needed for the 2020 TV sets, as they behave differently than sets from prior years.
.Suggest for now that it is best to leave the DTS box unchecked in the Plex app. When checked, you may or may not get audio. When unchecked, you always get audio.
Same TV, 2020 LG OLED65CXPUA. APP version 5.1.1
Same issue, descriptive audio plays when DTS-HDMA 7.1 is selected, DTS 5.1 has no sound, …
Same with PLEX on Amazon Fire stick working plugged into same TV (Audio HDMI pass-through)
Audio out on TV is set to “optical”
Workaround: Going into Plex Settings > Audio and unchecking DTS (DCA)
Allows the DTS streams to play correctly…
Got an LG NANO90 this week. Went through every setting on the TV I could think of, then I found this thread. Turning off DTS in the Plex settings fixed the no sound issue for me. No idea why the TV/App can’t just pass it through because my receiver supports it just fine. I have the HDMI ARC set to passthrough as well.
I had the same issue on my new LG TV, unselected DTS and now Plex is transcoding the audio stream. Glad to not have to return the TV. Thanks for the post!
