Plex automatically converting video quality

Server Version#: 1.18.1.2019
Player Version#: Windows 10, Firefox 70.0 on web?

Hi all,

I have a Plex server running on a remote seedbox. I also have a server running off my personal desktop, but that’s not the problem I’m having.

My remote Plex server was reinstalled the other day. Since I reinstalled it, it automatically converts my movies to a max of 2 Mbps, 720p HD. It says that it is converting it. However, my Firefox settings tell me they are the same as always - maximum quality. There is no option in my player to watch a movie above 720p. I have tested Plex on Chrome and I get the same issue.

However, I recently watched my Plex via an Amazon Fire and I was able to watch it in maximum quality. I am unable to test Plex via the desktop app because I get an error 13 every time. I have never had a problem running Plex at maximum quality on my desktop.

Any suggestions on fixes? I reinstalled it a few times but no difference. All other Plex servers have no problem allowing me to watch maximum quality videos.

Thanks in advance.

Correct the firewall issues and verify Remote Access is on & green.

You have an indirect connection and this is why the output is locked at 2 Mbps.

Thanks, this solved the problem perfectly! I opened port 32400 and I can play it all with no problems.

Hi Chuck, this solution worked until today. I used Plex on a Chromecast last night, and went back to my desktop today, and I’m back to an indirect connection limited to 720p. My seedbox (where the server is running) usually runs at a 20 Gbit/s speed, so it must be something with my desktop and the latest updates. I have both TCP 32400 open and UDP 1900 open, anything else that would make a difference?
