Plex cannot access the media on Synology server

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151-7000
Player Version#:4.90.1

Issue:
Plex falsely claims my Synology Shared Folder(s) are empty.

Synology 718+
DSM 7.1-42661 Update 4 (latest)

History
Was running and using Plex 1.21.xxx but hadn’t used it in about a year or so. I tried to play something this week and it wouldn’t. All media was “Unavailable.”

My attempts.

  1. Router and internet hasn’t changed so I did nothing to my router.
  2. I updated Plex to latest version.
  3. Synology was current as it was auto-updating.
  4. I spent hours on the shared folder permission settings, restarting the NAS, and creating new shared folders. Same error.
I read this message a number of times as I did have this same issue in the past.
Plex Server on Synology Doesn't See Movie Files - #2 by ChuckPa
  5. Disabled my Nord VPN which was never a problem before.
  6. Reset my browsers to factory defaults and tried different browsers.
  7. I finally checked the logs…(“black” is my server)

Can you upload your server logs, along with the file name and path of a file that should be in your library?

@dan1301

When you first upgrade from 1.21.0-3744. you should have noticed a protracted time to install.

This is normal and expected. PMS 1.21.0.3744 was for DSM 7 beta only

After DSM 7 became final release, Plex was moved to its final location in PlexMediaServer.

The first install (or upgrade) will take extra time “Processing” to move your files.

Did you interrupt that process ?

I don’t think so but I don’t remember seeing any “processing.” and it seemed pretty quick.
I don’t think I restarted synology/Plex server for at least an hour after unless there was something else I could have done to interupt it.
My media library only has ~50 items.

My image above shows what the folder looks like now. Totally empty. After upgrade all the metadata, posters, artwork etc was shown as it had always been though it all said “Unavailable” when trying to play. After messing around for a while and making new shared folders it became empty.

Do you think I just delete everything and reinstall from scratch?
My only concern would be losing access to a friend’s server he shared with me.

Plex Media Server.log (235.7 KB)

its a permissions issue Failed to create iterator to "/volume1/media2": Permission denied

What user are you giving read/write permissions to?

These are the only places I changed permissions.

FIXED!! Thank you dbirch and ChuckPa!

Had to select “System internal user” from pull down menu and check RO for PlexMediaServer. Argh! I thought it had something to do with permissions which is why I spent hours on it and I still missed it.

Found the solution here but my Synology interface was different.

This fixed it.

I figured it was something like that, but because you insisted permissions where correct, I figured Id try to lead you review your permissions.

@dan1301

Now that you know, I recommend you delete the obsolete / abandoned “Plex” user.

I would have removed it for you but DSM 7 did not allow that. (No privileges anymore for apps in DSM 7)
