Plex client for Roku flaky during playback

Server Version#: 1.32.3.7262
Player Version#: 7.3.2.8429

Two or three months ago, I installed a Roku Streaming Stick + to use in conjunction with my in-home Plex server. It worked beautifully for the first 2-3 weeks and then stopped responding appropriately to commands from the Roku remote. It started taking 2 or more presses of the Roku Home button to open the Roku app. And—while playing a video—if I had to fast forward to reach a prior stop point, it would frequently ignore my attempts to step forward, fast forward, or enable subtitles, then throw me out of the video, or even toss me out of the Plex app to the Roku Home screen. In fact, it was acting like an outdated PC that couldn’t keep up with commands from the remote and suddenly catching up by playing an entire batch. I was able to briefly correct this issue by replacing the remote batteries, but then the same behavior returned. (I specifically asked Roku Support WHY a remote could run through a set of batteries in a couple of weeks and whether it was being continually drained, but got no response.)

Roku Support suggested (among other things) that I power the Roku via a wall outlet rather than USB, update the Plex server (which is always kept up-to-date), ensure that the Roku app for Plex was current (it already was), and then uninstall and reinstall the Plex for Roku app. Nothing has fixed this wonky, annoying behavior with this 4k-capable streaming device. (I’d hoped that running it from an electrical outlet might prevent battery-related issues with the remote, but I don’t know whether it did or not.)

Their latest suggestion is that something must be wrong with the Plex for Roku app. I responded by pointing out that the app is used by thousands by Plex users and if this was a known issue, the forums would be filled with complaints. So… Is this a known issue or should they—as I’ve repeatedly requested—just replace this new Roku stick and remote?

Do you have an old universal remote you can use to test with? If it’s just the remote you can get a replacement for 7-10 bucks from Amazon or Walmart

I wouldn’t recommend you buy a whole new Roku unless you make sure it’s not the remote first

The Roku, Firestick, Intel forums are mostly the same. It can’t possibly be that you have a defective product it has to do with some unknown variable that makes no sense

Nope. Don’t have a universal remote. And as mentioned, although it sat in its box for a year or two before setting it up, it’s a “new in box” Roku and remote. I’d prefer OEM equipment since it’s new. I’m just trying to figure out why Roku is going to such lengths NOT to send me at least a replacement remote. If I get no satisfaction from them, I’ll try it with a replacement remote of some sort.

Note: I also just tested a new Fire Stick in the same hdmi port, and it works perfectly. No weird behaviors—so far.
