Plex home menu is un-controllable on Roku

Server Version#: 1.32.5.7349-8f4248874
Player Version#: 7.6.1.8501-67117911f-Plex (Roku)

Two days ago (Aug 14) the Plex home menu became un-uasable. When attempting to select a show or movie to watch the selection tool becomes uncontrollable.

A single click to the left or to the right (or up & down) of the remote will cause the selection to go uncontrollably in whatever direction it is commanded to instead of just going to the next title. This is true in all of the libraries and is happening on multiple Roku devices (two different Roku Ultra’s and one Streaming Stick 4k) connected to this Plex Media Server. This is not a malfunction of the Roku remotes, as it is happening on multiple TVs, multiple devices, each with different remotes (all Roku’s, I have nothing else to test on).
Works fine on Ios mobile app, but thats a point and touch interface, not a scroll and click like the Roku’s

I have rebooted the media server multiple times (both rebooting just the application, but also rebooting the entire machine, as well as a complete shut down, wait, restart), run cache cleaner, searched for updates (which I cannot find any of) it seems I’m running the latest version. Nothing else is running on the Mac other than Plex.

At a loss of what to do next to fix this.

Thanks!

Hi, by rebooting your machine do you mean you went into Roku settings → System → System restart?

I’m having the exact same issue with my Roku Ultra. Narrowed down the issue solely to Plex app and the physical remote control (the iOS app navigation works perfectly). I actually have two physical remote controls and both are producing the issue. Issue continues even after a reboot of the Roku. All other apps on the Roku function correctly.

Looks like it’s a Roku issue as it’s been reported on their forums Remote skips or jumps over multiple channels - Page 15 - Roku Community

I have rebooted (complete shutdown, power off, and restart) of both the Plex Server Mac and the Roku. No change in the behavior. Roku does not respond in this manner (skipping titles and running amok) in any other app, i.e. Netflix, Amazon, etc.

I’ve been having the same issue, I didn’t even think to come here because other devices + remotes in my home are not having the same problem (likewise, this doesn’t happen when I use the Roku app on my phone for remote purposes).

So, I think I’m going to try what the Roku boards suggested, and, restart the Roky, unmarry my Roku remote, and remarry.

Interesting - I only have this issue in Plex, not in other apps like Netflix, amazon, etc., but it does seem to be a systemwide Roku issue from those posts. ??

Please do me a favor and try this:
Press and hold the pairing button on your voice remote for 20 seconds.
The status light should slowly flash green, stop, and then flash rapidly. When this happens, release the pairing button and your remote will restart.
Press and hold the pairing button for 5 seconds, or until you see the status light begin to flash.
On TV screen input TV type then do the ‘do you hear the music’ setup.
I suspect that a update breaks the remote’s firmware and this does a complete reset on the remote itself.
Try it and reply with any results positive or negative.

I performed the sequence you requested and the issue persists.

Hi @royelam.

Thanks for trying.
I follwed the Roku remote reset sequence, but the app is still misbehaving. I click once, but the app still skips randomly… between 2 and 5 clicks.
I’ve even gone as far as uninstalling and reinstalling the Plex app.
The Roku interface and every other app work just fine. No issues.

Unplug the Roku for a few minutes then plug it back in.

I found the solution.
After the issue started with another app, I contacted Roku…

The instructions given to correct the issue are:

  1. Unplug the Roku for 30 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in.
  3. While the Roku logo is bouncing on the screen, press the pairing button on the remote until you see the the light flashing.
  4. Finish pairing the remote according to the instructions on the screen.

This fixed the issue in less than 1 minute!

Thank you!!! This has been driving me crazy. Repairing after a power cycle did the trick. Much appreciated!!
