Plex client won't sync my Plex content (New to Plex)

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1913-e5cc93306
Player Version#: 8.0.2.17816

I’m new to Plex and trying to get the hang of it.

I attached an external HDD to Shield and inside the NVIDIA_SHIELD folder I created subfolders like Movies, Music Videos, etc.,

I then went to https://app.plex.tv/ on my PC and logged into my profile and I created custom libraries and I pointed them to the correct location on the shield folder on the HDD.

So I can see that these libraries are syncing my content. So far so good.

When I open Plex client on Shield TV, Android phone or iPad (all logged in to my account) - I do not see those custom libraries I created.
At the very least I’m expecting these libraries to be listed on client where the server is running (Shield TV).

What am I missing?

The 2nd problem I’m seeing is that the Remote Access keeps changing from “Fully accessible outside your network” to inaccessible.
My router supports UPnP and I can remote to almost anything on my network. I couldn’t figure out why the remote access gets inaccessible every couple of minutes.

If you created those libraries after setting up the client, they might not be showing up in your main navigation right away. Instead they might appear under More – you can Pin them so they show up in the main navigation as well.

If remote access is working for you… ignore the status indicator for now. It’s known to be off and Plex appears to be working on some fix.

Thanks!
I found the folders. Your answer is correct!

Also I learned that to watch my content on my Plex clients (iOS, Android) I need Plex Pass subscription.
However, if I use the web version I can watch the content. Is this corrent?

The mobile Plex clients (iOS, Android) are restricted unless unlocked/activated. Having a Plex Pass is one option to unlock them (this will unlock all devices using your Plex account). Alternatively you can unlock the apps with a one-time-activation (usually ~5$; this will unlock all devices using that app store ID; if you use different app stores [e.g. Google Play vs. Amazon Fire], you’ll need multiple activations!).
So while Plex will certainly happily take your monthly subscription to contribute to the further development of the app… it’s not a prerequisite for using those apps.

Side note: Unlocking the app does not give you a Plex Pass… it’ll just unlock that app. For Plex-Pass only features such as the PlexAmp player for a mobile or desktop, you’ll still need a Plex Pass.

Hi Tom. Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Just to make sure I understand…
Say I have an iPhone and iPad devices. Both using the same AppStore ID.

If I buy a one-time-activation, it will unlock both the iOS and iPad Plex Client?

And that activation is perpetual for that AppStore ID, even if I install Plex Client on more iDevices using the same AppStore ID?

Lastly, unlocking the app simply gives me the ability to play an entire movie, episode, whatever without limitation and nothing else, correct?

Edit 1: I noticed there are FAQ articles to read below your reply. I’ll read them now, but still would appreciate a reply on the first couple of questions

Edit 2: My Nvidia Shield Pro came with Plex Server installed. I manually installed the Plex Android client on the Shield Pro.
So even if the Shield Plex client sits on the same device as the server, I need to purchase an activation in order to playback without limitations?

Yes. The activation is connected to that same Apple ID.

Correct.
There’s certain features that require a Plex Pass that won’t be available to you in those apps (e.g. syncing content to the mobile device).

The “big screen” apps (e.g. Plex for Apple TV, Plex for Android TV, desktop clients…) are free. No need to activate those. Just the mobile players require activation.

Thanks, Tom. You’ve been a great help!

The last thing I don’t understand is why the Web application allows to play contents without limitations. What’s the incentive to purchase an activation?
I’m happy to pay the activation fee and I will, but if the web application is working fine, what am I missing here?

Browsers have limited playback capabilities.
There’s a number of users running Plex in their mobile browsers… but usually, the native players will give you a better user experience and better playback capabilities. Also… they integrate into the local OS, so you can e.g. control music playing on your iPhone through an Apple Watch (or via the lock-screen playback controls).
