Plex created a new server after update to DSM 7

Unfortunately, I was not aware that with the update to DSM 7, the Plex server needs to be migrated. That’s why I updated to DSM 7 without any preparation. After updating Plex to the DSM 7 version of Plex, Plex created a new server (Ebiserve). Now I no longer have access to the database from my old server (PlexSynoServe). Is there any way to access my old data again?

Plex Server Version: 1.32.4.7195
Synology DSM Version: DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 6

In this FAQ it says I have to do the following steps:

  1. Change the shared folder permissions using
    a. Open Control Panel
    b. Shared Folders
    c. EDIT the Plex share
    d. Permissions tab
    e. Click Customize
    f. Check all Administration
    g. Check all Read
    h. Check all Write
    i. Click Done
    j. Check ‘Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files’.
    j. Click Save (Applies shared folder permission changes)
    k. – Now wait until all changes are applied
    l. Click Save again to return to the Shared Folders app.

But I cannot find the customize botton or checkbox to edit the permissions:

I’ve seen this behavior from DSM.

It’s occurred when the “Plex” shared folder was created on DSM 4 & 5
before “Custom” was supported.

The solution to this is simple:

  1. Ensure Plex is stopped
  2. Rename shared folder “Plex” → “OldPlex”
  3. Create new shared folder “Plex”
  4. As you create it, give PlexMediaServer FULL CONTROL permissions
  5. With it now created, open FileStation
  6. Move OldPlex/Library → Plex/Library
  7. When complete,
    – Right click “Plex” → “Properties” → “Permission”
    – Confirm “Full Control” permission status (Fix if not showing)
    – “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files”
    – Allow to finish

When this completes, you can start the migration:

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 Plex app – Use the ERASE option
  2. Now install again
  3. If the DSM 6 data is found correctly, it will start automatically to migrate
    – It will sit “Installing” with no additional info.
  4. You will get a popup banner message if there are any errors.
    – Fix as appropriate
  5. DO NOT interrupt the migration process
  6. After 2-3 minutes , Open a second browser tab to the Syno
  7. In the Plex shared folder, you will see ‘Migration.log’. This contains the current status.
  8. When it shows “Cleaning /volume1/Plex Completed” , you’re done.

I wish I knew all that before I updated to DSM 7!

I still had all the media files of course, but I ended up recreating my (new) PMS from scratch, and lost all my custom metadata in the process.

I’ve always been here answering questions.

Plus, the faq has been here since the beginning.
