Plex default player setup

Hopefully this will help others, but I had to tell Alexa which default player to use by name. She would not give me a list to choose from like she did for the server.

How does one know the exact name of each of their players? Do you have to know the exact software AND device name in order to tell Alexa which player to use?

From our support article,

Say “Ask Plex to change my default player” and Alexa will speak back to you a list of players on your network.

Just as with setting your default server, you can skip the voice response and state the specific default player you want to use by saying “Ask Plex to change my default player to Fire TV” (or whatever your player’s name is).

That’s what I’m saying she never gave me a list, I had to tell her by name to even get her to set it up.

Im having the same issue. I need Alexa to pick up the HT player on my main HTPC but she only tells me of plexweb chrome, how do I name the Home Theatre player so I can tell her to set directly?

I pulled up connected devices in my router. It will show you the name of what’s connected.

I couldn’t get Alexa to find Plex on my Vizio TV app but I launched Plex on my PS4 and she found it and it’s working fine.

The skill will speak a list of all devices that register as an “available” player using the following phrases:

“Ask Plex”…
what are my players
what are my devices
what players i have
what devices i have
what players are available
what devices are available
what players do i have available
what devices do i have available
what players do i have
what devices do i have
list players
list devices
list my players
list my devices
what are my player names
what are my device names
what are my players named
what are my devices named

Your player must have the Plex app open to show up in this list. Hope that helps a bit!

@benheller, can we get those commands added to the FAQ page for Alexa voice commands?

Sure can! I’ve asked our support team to get that added to the page.

Is there anyway to change the names of registered players within plex media server to more user friendly names such as “kitchen TV” or am I stuck saying “Samsung UNF8500”?

Thanks!

If you can’t change the name inside of the Plex app, then sadly the answer is no. Hopefully the Plex devs will add this ability to every player, now that Alexa can control things.

No, that is not possible. You need to change it in the Plex client itself, if possible. Not all clients let you, but we’re working on it.

Thanks guys… another question… is the default player specific to each amazon device or amazon account? For example, if I had an echo in the kitchen I would have the default player be the TV in that room; and then have an echo dot in the family room who’s default player is my Plex Home Theater… is that possible?

Thanks in advance!

I just tested this situation and it is not currently possible. I have an Echo Dot in my theater and another in my living room. When I tell the Living Room Dot to set default to Roku Player and begin playing a movie and then tell the theater Dot to set default player to Server player, both Dots now control the Server player. Doesn’t seem each Dot can be assigned to a different player at this time. Pause and Resume was working on the player in the living room instead of the theater.

You would have to have multiple Amazon accounts and have each Dot on a different account, then give each Dot a specific default server and playback device. It’s like the limitation with the Harmony Hub.

Thats what I thought… thanks guys. This will be a lot easier when they let us change player names to common names. Hopefully they do that plus add some players soon. Cheers!

@jwaltman21 It turns out that you can play on multiple devices. You can select (1) default player but if you follow these steps, it will work to play on a different device than the default…

Do you have multiple players? You can specify which player you want to use for playing back any kind of media by adding it to the end of your voice command. Here are some examples: Ask Plex to…
Play Monsters Inc. on Roku

found the info on this page: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/236324808-Alexa-Voice-Commands

Thanks! That will be a lot easier once they enable you to change player names to common names i.e. “family room”. But it’s nice you can do it as long as you can remember the name!

Help! I think I’m almost there - I think. Will this work on my Samsung TV running the Plex App? I have all of the updated versions (app on smartv, latest Plex server). For some reason the skill does not see any of my Samsung TVs, just the app running in my windows browser and the app running on my Samsung Tablet. I can cast from the Plex web player to my Samsung TVs ( I can see the list of the three tvs in the web app). As some have suggested here, I tried to just “tell plex to make my default player UN28H4500” for example, but it doesn’t seem to like that. Any help?? I am so looking forward to making this work.
Thanks!
