Expected behavior for Plex Web.

  1. Due to the constraints of the web browser, Plex Web is a very limited client. On Windows, it has no support for HEVC video of any type, including Dolby Vision.

  2. Plex Media Server does not support transcoding of Dolby Vision video.

  3. Dolby Vision Profile 5 does not have a HDR compatibility layer.

  4. Therefore, since the client does not support the format and the server cannot transcode the format, playback fails with the “color space not supported” error.

If you wish to play Dolby Vision profile 5 videos in Plex, you will need both a client and display that supports the format.

Examples:

  • LG webOS TV that supports DV using the Plex webOS app.
  • Nvidia Shield Pro connected to a DV capable TV/monitor
  • Amazon Fire Stick 4K Max connected to a DV capable TV/monitor

I am using Samsung Smart TV. The Samsung Frame. It does not support Dolby Vision? I am using the built in App.

Not according to rtings.com: Samsung The Frame 2022 QLED Review (QN32LS03BBFXZA, QN43LS03BAFXZA, QN50LS03BAFXZA, QN55LS03BAFXZA, QN65LS03BAFXZA, QN75LS03BAFXZA, QN85LS03BAFXZA) - RTINGS.com

AFAIK, no Samsung TV supports Dolby Vision. They did not license the technology from Dolby.

DV profile 5 is used by the streaming services - Netflix, Apple, etc.

Other Dolby Vision profiles, such as those found on Blu-ray discs, contain a HDR10 compatibility layer.

Those videos should play on the Samsung.

The Plex app will play the HDR10 layer instead of the DV layer.

Here is an example of a Dolby Vision movie with a HDR10 compatibility layer.

How it appears in Plex Web (it may not appear this way in all clients):

Thanks. It says BT 2020 color space and DCI P3 mastering. So which is it? BT 2020 or DCI P3?

Both/neither. It is BT 2020 content, and it was mastered on a P3 display. That’s fairly normal for DoVi and HDR in general.
