After further investigation, this appears to be a longstanding issue that has yet to be resolved by Plex:
I’m so glad I used a free 30-day trial before committing to a Plex Pass!
Thanks to everyone for the input. It sounds to me like this functionality will be hit-or-miss until someone at Plex realizes it is a big deal.
