Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing

Are all the folks reporting this problem in this thread using network attached storage for their media? If so, what NAS vendor? And what protocol (NFS, SMB)? And how are you mounting the share in MacOS?

I have a Synology DS220, mounted on a Mac Mini M2 using SMB. Has been working fine for ~2 years. Mounted with Automounter.

I’m using a Mac Studio M2 Max with 7 Synology 1821+ NAS connected via SMB. Only two of the seven are affected. It’s just my TV Shows library. They’re each connected via Finder, and to keep them connected I also user AutoMounter. But I’ve tried various ways to connect, even turning off AutoMounter to see if it was that. Reset the keychains. Changed my passwords so it would force a new prompt to sign in. Same behaviors.

Plus, the other five are used for my Movies library and they all work as expected.

And all the Unavailable files play thru the Mac desktop Plex app, but not my iPhone, iPad or Apple TV or my remote users. But Infuse plays those same Unavailable files thru all those devices without a problem.

Staff simply needs to be made aware of the problem and it’s likely a quick fix.

I am also having the same issue after upgrading the Mac OS. Synology SMB shares with automounter. Only affecting my Movies folder as far as I can see, I have access to about 1/3 of the library. Running latest beta version of Plex.

Yes, using Synology NAS over SMB on Mac Mini M1

I find it interesting that you’ve laid this a Plex’s doorstep considering all the other commonalities in the failing scenarios: Synology NAS, (Pixeleyes) AutoMounter (leaving aside for a moment the fact that you said you tried other mount methods), and an upgrade to Sequoia. I’m not saying that it’s not Plex, but really, this is a fairly specific combination of ingredients could indicate a slightly more complex interaction than just “Plex needs to fix it.” Plex just looks at the location(s) specified for the libraries and attempts stat/read the files. They’re either available or they aren’t, when requested. This could be a change in Sequoia’s SMB implementation or a change in how AutoMounter makes the mounts available (I’m thinking timing here).

I’d be curious to see if anyone has experienced this with locally-attached storage (i.e. USB drives or internal storage) or even another vendor’s NAS devices.

I wouldn’t drop it in Plex’s lap if I hadn’t eliminated everything else first.

It’s ONLY affecting Plex, it’s only affecting some files sometimes. I can remove and re-add the shares and Plex will find them. Then on a second scan loses them. I can scan again and some files will come back and some others will go away.

It could be something Apple changed, but then it would affect other things, and if it was something Apple changed, then Plex needs to catch up to figure out why their app is the only one affected.

Besides that, more of my computers that are connected to my network would be experiencing some connection issue, if it’s even a connection issue.

And the kicker is Infuse, which is connected via Plex direct and plays everything on every device regardless if it says Unavailable or not.

So the file is there. It’s an error of some kind because it shows a trashcan saying it’s Unavailable, but when you right click the three dots on the poster for the file and hit Get Info, the file isn’t unavailable. It’s right there. That’s an inconsistency in Plex. And on my Desktop I can hit the trashcan and it will become a play symbol and play. I’ve tried it on several computers on my network.

Same thing appears to be happening to this user in this thread. We need Plex staff support.

Hey @Speidel, thanks for noting this. Yes, experiencing the same issue and I’ve determined that I can now replicate the following behaviour with my Movies library:

  1. Default library scan will tag about half of my items as missing (even tho the file is still there) (I’ve temporarily turned off the auto-empty recycle bin so I can see the movies affected)
  2. Edit Library > update folder path to point to the same location > it rescans and adds the missing entries back in
  3. default library scan will tag the same items as missing again

Thinking its an issue with the default scan, but changing any of the library scan options (using Plex Movie currently) doesn’t seem to address it.

Another possible theory that I’m still digging into - seems like most (maybe all) of the movies that it detects as missing have multiple files in the folder (usually a subtitle .srt file), while others that are not affected only have the single video file (either no subtitles or packaged in an .mkv). Possible that the scanner is detecting / conflicting with the other file in the directory with the same name?

Anyone who is experiencing this issue, can you please share your PMS logs?

I have an Mac M1 that is connected to a Synology NAS for it’s media content. I have not observed this issue yet. Some things that I did notice with the new Mac OS update was a prompt to allow PMS local network discovery.

If you did not see this prompt for whatever reason it might be good to double check that this is enabled.

Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network

This  is just my initial observations so far and might be unrelated. We will need logs to better understand the issue.

Thank you. It is enabled on my Mac. I will DM you a link to my logs.

You should read a book called “How to win friends and influence people”.

I have, thanks. I’ve spent almost a decade dealing your support system. My patience has run thin. It would be great if your company would actually be accountable and treat your customers with respect. But thanks for chiming in, great to know I finally got your attention.

Hi, requested logs forwarded to you. Thank you.

Also confirmed that the security & privacy setting is enabled.

Thank you - I’ve also now PM’d you my Plex sever logs. Much appreciated.

Plex library using Plex Movie scanner
Default library scan will identify about half of items as ‘missing’, while updating the library folder to the same location will scan and bring those items back.

  • noticed that most of the folders that are identified as ‘missing’ contain multiple files (usually an .srt subtitle file with the same name) while others that are not identified as missing are a single file (usually packaged in an .mkv) - haven’t confirmed yet if this applies to all missing items, but is a start of a theory.

Plex Version: 1.41.0.8992
MacOS: 15.0
Media on Synology RS819 DSM Version 7.2.1-69057 Update 5

  • volume mounted via default Synology SMB share - full read/write permissions
  • confirming Plex app on MacOS has full access to Local Network and Disk

Nice observation. I’ll add that into the mix. Thanks!

I have a very large sample size and this is affecting every file format. Doesn’t matter if a folder has one file or hundreds. Doesn’t matter if there are embedded subtitles or external ones. And it’s not affecting my Movies library, only my TV Shows library.

What’s even odder is that I can remove all the missing TV series folders, setting those folders aside, do a scan, they will then be confirmed missing, add the folders back, do another scan and they all become available again. Then do another scan and they become unavailable again.
