Plex for Mac does not install/load

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version#: Plex-1.15.0.1354-d31489f0

Plex app on Mac updated automatically, but failed to load. Icon keeps bouncing till it tells me its unresponsive, given it over 10 minutes to see if it was doing anything in the background. I deleted the old app, and tried to delete anything else that was leftover with CleanMyMac in an attempt to do a fresh install. But nothing works. I had the same issue yesterday when trying to install the player version before this (release date 13 july, dont know the version number).

Not really sure what to do, and don’t really feel as a paying customer its up to me to dive in deep to solve this issue.

Check if these files in this support article are still present.

Which MacOS version are you running?

You might be best also looking at Plex for Mac, instead Plex media player

Running MacOs 10.15.5
Plex Server is running on Ubuntu and works fine. So I am not looking to uninstall the server part, just the player part. Indeed I am talking about Plex for Mac, sorry about the confusion

Plex just released another update… Now its version: Plex-1.15.1.1358-43550df5

It still does not install :frowning:

You need to allow install in System Pref pane for Security & Privacy/General/Allow

Yeah, that’s not the issue. It’s after that step when its tries loading/installing the app that it goes wrong.

I might be confused because of how you’re using the word “Install”.

You’ve downloaded Plex-1.15.1.1358-43550df5-x86_64.zip. You extracted Plex.app from that. You put it in your /Applications directory. (Right?)

The very first time you open it, you should be prompted about it being an app downloaded from the Internet. Do you get that prompt?

Then what happens?

All correct. I have my settings in MacOS set to allow apps downloaded from Appstore and Identified Developers. That setting leads to the prompt if I indeed really wanna open the app, so i click on open.

Then what happens, the Plex App Icon starts bouncing up and down in the dock, like it should when an app opens on Mac Os. That goes on for roughly 2 minutes, then the bouncing stops, a right click on the icon tells me its not responding and I have the option to force quit

I would try to follow SE56’s advice to remove any maybe-leftover files. I’d look at the uninstall instructions for Plex.app here first:

The client apps are close kin to the server, and if you aren’t using PMS on that machine, it can’t hurt to remove anything that might be left over. @SE56’s suggestion to look for server-related files is valid.

If you’ve used PMP:

Ok, following the first like, I had a look, the Plex folder was already gone from " ```
~/Library/Application Support/ "

I rebooted, checked again searching the system for anything with PLEX in the name… Nothing. Redownloaded the app from the website, unzipped it, dragged it to Applications Folder and opened it. Still same issue.

I’m in over my head now! Probably need somebody with more info about troubleshooting the Mac app to speak up.

Any logs in here?
~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Plex Media Server/Logs

All of that is gone (might have been helpful if I paid attention not to delete the logs hehe)

Can you explain which Library you searched, did you follow the support article to the letter?

I followed this as per your link, later repeated by @Volts

macOS

To completely remove Plex for macOS from your macOS computer, first make sure the Plex.app is not running.

Using the Finder’s “Go” menu, select Go To Folder… then enter the following in the dialog box that pops up:

~/Library/Application Support/

Delete the Plex inside the Application Support directory.

Delete the actual application itself in under Applications (e.g. /Applications/Plex.app ).

Did you delete the plex media server cache file, in caches ~/Library/Caches/plexmediaserver

To remove old Plex for mac do similar searches.

To manually look in this Library, navigate to the go menu, hold down option key, cache and application support/Plex

This folder is also gone already.

Ok your on Mojave is that correct 10.14

Go to apple menu, top left/ about Mac

Catalina 10.15.5

Ok, that good. I’m on Catalina.

So now what is your objective, you have a Ubuntu server

Correct, server is running Ubuntu. Plex works perfectly fine on iPad, iPhone. Webbased works, though it for some reason wants to transcode which my server absolutely cannot do, but I wont pollute this topic with that. I use Xplay on LG Web Os, also works without a glitch. So Im 100% sure this is a Mac Os related problem.
