Mojave Mac 10.14.6 - Fresh install of OS and Plex Server, Crashes on Launch

Brand new install of Mojave, and a brand new install of Plex. Never installed on here before. When I download the app and unzip it to the Applications folder and launch it, nothing happens. In the Library/Logs folder, there’s a crash report. I’ve pasted it at the bottom of this email.

I’ve tried uninstalling, re-downloading, re-unzipping, and re-lanching after restarting my Mac, and no dice. There are no hidden folders for Plex that I can remove as I’ve read online to do a fresh uninstall. But, it doesn’t even get to the point where it can create this folders on my Mac hard drive.

I’ve tried searching with the error messages contained in my crash report below and I’m not seeing much. Can someone from Plex help?

I believe Plex Media Server for Mac is NOT compatible with Mojave or Catalina.

That is why I’m still on High Sierra. I know this was true a few months ago and I looked at the current installation guide in the support site and it only mentions up to macOS Sierra as the compatible macOS. I know for certain High Sierra is okay as I have ran it for a few years without an issue.

Ahhh shoot. The download site says Mavericks and newer so I was hoping… Seems like some people have got it working but who knows…

That is absolutely wrong, I ran PMS on Mojave for over 12 months and now Catalina without any major issues. Those issues were regularly fixed by updates.

So I don’t know why you thought that rubbish.

The issue is probably in Security and Privacy preferences/ General / allow apps downloaded.

Otherwise know as Gate Keeper.

@SE56 It’s great news that PMS runs on Catalina as expected, thanks!

I also thought the OP’s issue might have been Catalina security, but when looking at the OP’s output, it complains of a simple error, where it can’t find a shared library. So I wasn’t sure what to say.

I’m not upgrading my new iMac to Catalina for a bit.

If that’s a Catalina permissons symptom, would a developer clarify or someone test? I’m not upgrading my new iMac to Catalina for a bit.

Just to clarify, it’s Mojave I’m on. Not Catalina.

@Se56: I’ll double check when I get home but I’m pretty sure I double checked Gatekeeper settings and white-listed it. As far as I know, you don’t usually get a crash log (especially the one I got) when attempting to load an App that is blacklisted on Gatekeeper. It just doesn’t open at all. This actually generates crash logs. The main error message being related to a dynamic library not loading:

Dyld Error Message: Library not loaded: @rpath/libboost_iostreams.dylib

Im running on an High

10.13.6 and cannot upgrade due to an old MacBook pro. and i also have this issue. so it seems that it is not catalina.

Do developers ever come here to look at issues being posted?

In short, yes. If there is a lot forum noise a reply often occurs.

Your issue maybe from a incorrect Uninstall.

I agree, follow the instructions to do a complete uninstall, then re-download and reinstall.

As I said in my original post

I’ve tried uninstalling, re-downloading, re-unzipping, and re-lanching after restarting my Mac, and no dice. There are no hidden folders for Plex that I can remove as I’ve read online to do a fresh uninstall. But, it doesn’t even get to the point where it can create this folders on my Mac hard drive.

Do you have any software firewalls, anti-virus programs, etc running on your Mac?

Hey how’s everybody doing :coffee:

@Ringo_Ski thanks for the information. In the digging I had done, I never turned up the same wording as you captured in your screenshot (nicely done). It says,

Failed to read file /Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/MacOS/…/Frameworks/libboost_iostreams.dylib
details: Permission denied

So that was neat to have the extra detail that Plex Media Server.app might have screwy perms.
Let’s investigate that quickly if you still have the app installed. What do you see for

ls -l "/Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/Frameworks/"

What can happen to an app is that it gets copied back and forth somewhere that accidentally strips the executable permissions off the files inside the app. It’s a long story. So I’ll move on.

@themagpieswarble let’s have you check the permissions with that same command and let us know what you find.

Thanks @nibbles. I’ll check when I get home and get back to you.

1.18.0 (1.18.0.1913) is a bit of an earlier build. Please try just downloading 1.18.0.1944 from downloads page and replace in Applications folder. https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

1.18.1.1966 is also available as a Plex Pass beta on the page, if you don’t want to get the beta then click the Plex Pass downloads switch on the page to show 1.18.0.1944

if you are running any antivirus see if it can whitelist Plex

Will check and post back here later today. Thanks for the quick response.

Thanks @BigWheel, I didn’t realize there were newer versions. I’ll try that too!

interesting how this is wheel

it’s just a system group macos - What is the "wheel" user in OS X? - Super User

Did you try updating to 1.18.0.1944 or 1.18.1.1966? What server version are you on? Do you have antivirus?
