Plex for Mac/Windows 1.34.1 Test Builds

Any chance for a M1 macOS build soon-ish?

This version is unusable for me (Windows 10).
I’ve rollback to 1.33 client and nvidia drivers to 471.68.
It’s still not smooth at all, but at least usable.

Can you clarify what you mean by unusable?

Your info seems to indicate that maybe some sort of AV/antimalware software killed it because it thinks that there was a buffer overrun on the stack (false positive?). Are you running something like this?

Do you mean something like Nvidia publishing documentation on how developers can stop this from displaying in their app? Perhaps I missed it but there seems to be none. Though even that isn’t the first thing that should come to mind since obviously Nvidia should be providing a setting to users to the effect of “Don’t show the FPS counter in these apps.”

If you are going to mangle the output of every single app that opens a graphics context, then it is a responsibility you are taking. Barring that you must at least provide mechanisms to disable it on a per-app basis. Nvidia appears to have done neither.

I am only running the inbuilt windows defender AV/spyware service. I’ve not seen any alerts from it but I will check it’s logs. I can try it with it disabled too.

Much better in general. UI is no longer sluggish.

CPU usage on idle down from 45% to around 4-5% so massive improvement there. However it’s using 80% GPU which is insane! Draining laptop battery incredibly quickly.

FYI using XPS 13 9310 in case it helps any developer looking at this.

Are you using a “preview” edition of Windows?
If you do: Windows security's Exploit protection workaround. To allow directplay to work on windows client

Using this version, I’m experiencing heavy GPU usage when playing any movie.
the issue is worse when playing in a 2160p screen, the iGPU stays in 100% usage:

below is when using the 1080p laptop screen:

Downloaded this on my Windows 11 beta (latest build on the Beta channel) to my Lenovo P1 (Gen 3) laptop. Light years better performance. I have all five seasons of the Twilight Zone hosted on my Plex server and use this as my test since there’s lots to scroll through.

Scrolling is now fairly zippy, CPU/memory usage never seemed to be an issue for me but the previous UI was slooooow as molasses although the Windows Task Manager didn’t show any one area as a bottleneck.

The one thing that I have noticed is that this build seems to be using my GPU (the Intel GPU and not the Nvidia on this system). Playing video pegs the “3D Decode” performance graph; prior to this test build it never seemed to get any noticeable use.

Been using for 3-4 days now without issue on Windows 10.

It should be similar to what you see when running Chrome. The difference in this build is that we stopped disabling the GPU in Chromium (previously the GPU being enabled cause problems with some systems).

Hopefully this will be improved with the next version as it should include the dvxa2-egl and d3d11-egl rendering mechanisms which will not be using copy-back (where every frame is copied GPU → CPU → back to GPU).

Will you still receive in-app automatic updates later on if you install the test build?

Its good.

This version will perform the update check but whether the update site will inform it of the updated version is not a question I can answer because the circumstances around how this version was made are a bit odd. We will likely have to wait for the next version to see and then if it doesn’t, it may be possible to fix it at the time.

I used to run a Windows Insider build, but not for sometime. I have followed the guide you linked to, but it has made no difference.

I’ve tried with my adblocker off (Adguard), my AV/Spware and Firewall switched off (Windows Defender) and the exclusions suggested. No luck, the test version of the Plex app continue to crash immediately for me.

this new build is much better. there was some lagginess in some of the menu’s like the resume playback ui and others. much more fluid

I have noticed that when I am edit a movie or tv show, then I click the back arrow at the top of the screen it always return to the home page instead of staying the main movies or tv shows screen.

The lasts build as of today still has the same problem.

Thanks, this has fixed the slowdown. I still have an issue with the back button taking me to Home every time rather than taking me back to where I was before.

The back button is a known issue and will fixed in a future update. This release is meant to specifically test the gpu acceleration.
