Plex for PlayStation 4 v2 beta

any update on the next update?

Hi all. No news yet on the next platform update. We’re still working with Sony to address a few issues before we can begin the process of updating. Platform updates usually require a large amount of testing to make sure regressions don’t sneak in, and the next platform update is likely going to be fairly substantial in terms of changes under the hood, but also user-facing performance improvements. I’ll post updates when I have more to share.

I saw that their was a mini-update, I got my playlists showing in VIDEOS now, and very happy! thank you!

Only real issue I have other than the usual crashing if browsing through multiple libraries in one session (generating cover art causing it?) is it will still periodically hang when scanning forward or back during video playback. I’ll typically have to leave the app and close it through the PS4 menu screen to get it back to playable.

Would be super nice to see the new UI look like the Apple TV Beta UNO UI (link here: https://forums.plex.tv/t/apple-tv-beta-with-uno-ui/393124). I think it looks pretty nice and well laid out. As the thread states that the UNO UI specifically focuses on the UI:

What is the UNO UI?

UNO is the internal name for our new unified TV experience primarily focused on improved navigation and user customization. Some of the key features include…

  • Customizable & always accessible sidebar navigation.
  • Ability to pin your favorite libraries from all your servers to the sidebar.
  • Reorder your libraries in the sidebar.
  • Quick access to all the rest of your media through the “More” menu item.
  • Redesigned tab views that remember your previous view within each library (can be controlled via setting).
  • A customizable home screen including pinning content rows from any library to home.

Any chance of PGS format support for PS4 in future? My upload speed is 20mb and my friends have trouble watching remotely if they turn subs on which is weird as without subs it plays fine for them. My server is a synology ds918+ with HW acceleration on and I have remote stream bitrate set as 8MBs and my server doesn’t even hit 30% for CPU when transcoding with or without subs but it only buffers for them when they try subs.

Why not just convert them to srt and I’m pretty sure PGS does work with ps4.

PS4 media player I believe supports the PGS format but not the plex app

Yea I’m not sure cause I’ve used all and they’ve worked fine, .srt, .pgs, .ass etc. all work fine, unless Plex transcodes them to a different format but I don’t believe so.

Yh plex has to transcode the PGS format to burn them in, I’m using a temporary solution of using opensubtitles.org in the agents but I do wish PGS was supported on PS4 plex

I got this program I could give u if u want. https://subtitlesapp.com/. (For Windows)

@primetime43 The UNO UI will be coming to the PS4, we’re working on it so hold tight.

@waqster94 There are no plans to support PGS without transcoding unfortunately, the platform player doesn’t provide us with a way to support it.

@Moussa thank you for your hard work. I just bought a Tidal subscription in order to stream music from my PS4. How can I access it? It’s not showing in my “Online media sources” or whatsoever. According to this link An Intro to TIDAL With Plex | Plex Support it is available for PS4 and that was the only reason I bought the subscritpion. Any help/hint would be highly appreciated

EDIT: Got it

Having used Plex on the PS4 for quite a while now, it’s obvious that if you use it just to play video, it works quite well, apart from the odd crash here and there, no big deal.

However, music play back is a different story. That has never worked properly, simply because tracks randomly stop playing, to reset it you have to skip a track one way or the other, which gets it going again but it repeats the same error frequently. The PS4 media player plays the music library back perfectly from my NAS so I know it’s the plex app.

Unfortunately for me, I wanted a complete multi media platform so it’s just not going to work. Was intending to buy the Plex pass but glad I didn’t now. If anyone knows of a fix, I’ll be interested to see it but I think realistically, it’s just not going to do everything it should on this console, for whatever reason.

I wonder if the music issue is PS4 memory stuff? Reason I ask, and I’ve not used it much since I’m not entirely sold on how PLEX curates my library, but I found that if you simply start an album, it seems to play fine. It’s when you move within the app while having music playing, either to look at another album or to start a photo slideshow to display on the TV while the music playing that it seems to crash. I thought that a random slideshow with music would be a given, but it was a guarantee crash. I’ve not tried it with the later updates.

9 out of 10 times my app crashes are from moving/scrolling between libraries and library views and then playing/sampling different files.

Hi Russ,
I don’t think it is because when I use Plex to play an album, I always start it off and leave it to play, I don’t do anything else in the app at the same time. Plus, to get it working again all you need to do is skip forward or back, and it’s plays again. It just seems to get stuck during play back, it doesn’t actually crash the app. It’s never improved since I started using Plex on Ps4 which is about a year now. I assume the focus is all on the video play back, hence music seems to have been overlooked.

Is anyone having issues with the PS4 player playing transcoded TRUEHD?

I’ve not had time to try and track down what’s going on, but any movie with TRUEHD is popping and clicking when played on PS4.

Edit: Looks like unchecking EAC3 in Plex for PS4 fixes this

@cameron We would love to support subtitles without transcodes but right now it’s not possible because of some platform issues. It’s definitely a priority for us.

Moussa, is there any hope for .srt text based soft subtitles without transcoding in the upcoming platform update?

Hello Moussa.
Thank you for your hard work.
I’m happy like a pig when I saw tidal on my ps4!
I run it
What the quality goes to Ps4 from tidal (hi-if)? MP3 or Flac?? Is it possible to listen flac via plex/tidal?
Your answer will be much appreciated!

I’ve been “forced” to put music on my plex server, so I now see what Paulzx1 is talking about. It’s incredibly flaky, especially if playing shuffle songs. It will get stuck or crash, sometimes simply cut off songs and go to the next. None of the “radio” options work. (the radio options would be great on the browser version, there’s no way to select “random album” that I can easily see.)

I’ve mostly been using the music through the browser at work, and it plays fine, so it’s certainly the PS4 or app causing problems. As Paul posted, the PS4 app doesn’t work for music.

If you could play music while running your photo’s as a slide show, it would be the absolute best.

I’m glad someone else has seen this! You’ve probably discovered more bugs than I knew about, I would just settle for being able to play albums or playlists through without it just randomly stopping in places, it’s so annoying. It doesn’t do it if you play music back via plex on your phone or on other platforms so it’s definitely specific to PS4.

You would think with 100 million sales of the console, this could be given a bit more attention. Surely it would be a great boost for Plex if it worked.
