Hi all. We’re working on addressing all of the issues raised here. There is an update coming tomorrow that should address many of the issues you’ve encountered, we’re still working on others.
I saw there’s an update since 15 minutes. As this is my first update on a PS4, how long does it take until it’s available for the users? I didn’t receive an update yet, thus still a broken PS4 (Pro) Plex app
It should be rolling out now, and will take a few minutes to an hour to roll out to everyone.
Thanks for the information. Finally some good news
Sorry for being inconvenient, but maybe there went something wrong? I’m a Plex enthusiast and I need my server, as I now barely have other options to stream locally, but on my PS4. Shouldn’t it already have rolled out? A status update would be great. I’m patient for quite a bit now already
@Moussa does that include reinstating the support for interlaced video that was removed (breaking almost all DVR direct (non-transcoded) playback in Australia)?
@Donatus1989 The update should be available to all now (unless there’s some caching inbetween our servers and your machine. Let us know if it helps.
@lennier76 No, not in this update. I’m not sure what you mean by breaking playback either. It should be transcoding, but if it actually fails to play then that’s a separate issue. As mentioned in the other thread please provide a sample for us to examine.
@moussa I’ve already explained to you the problem at length in my original posts from 2 weeks ago. Once again: the previous version of Plex could Direct Play interlaced video, now it can’t. I cannot transcode (nor do I want to) as my backend is a NAS. This is a straightforward regression of features that needs to be fixed as no-one in Australia will be able to Direct Play interlaced video recordings from Plex DVR. Forcing those users who can transcode to do so unnecessarily is very poor regardless, and for those that can’t transcode you’ve completely broken DVR playback in Australia.
I understand your frustration and I would like to help you resolve this. But as I’ve explained I cannot just revert the involved changes when all of the interlaced content we tested failed to play correctly. The ninja who first raised the issue is also Australian and they also tested Live TV and DVR content and in both situations they failed to correctly play. So when all my testing showed that interlaced content failed to play correctly without transcoding, all the ninja’s content (which is as similar to your content as can be) failed to play correctly without transcoding, and Sony tell us interlaced content is not supported, then I cannot just revert a change where the evidence points to a negative outcome.
Saying that, I would love to be proved wrong! If we can support interlaced content that would be fantastic, but I would really like to see some sample content that is capable of being direct played on the PS4 so that I can investigate why it’s different and (selectively) re-enable support if possible.
@moussa, thanks for your reply but you continue to ignore the fact that the previous version of the PS4 app worked! You should know better than I how Plex accomplished that, but I’d suggest you probably de-interlaced in the app. It has nothing to do with server transcoding or what the PS4 directly supports, both of which have not changed! Seriously, look at how the previous working implementation of interlaced video playback - without transcoding - worked on your app and replicate that functionality in the new one. How hard can it be?
I can record and send you a sample video (as could your Australian Ninja) but again that is pointless as it has nothing to do with the file data, it’s purely a change to how the Plex app deals with that. How else do you explain that every interlaced DVR file I’ve recorded in the past year or more Direct Played in the old Plex app without any issues?
We did test against the previous app (we weren’t sure if it was some odd regression or if it was always the case), but again it failed to play there too. Which is not a surprise since both were using the same underlying player. So (from our perspective) there is no working implementation to test against. But as I said, I would love to re-enable support but I would super appreciate a sample to test against first to ensure we’re not breaking other user’s videos.
@Moussa I don’t know what went wrong, but I still don’t have received any update. I have a PS4 Pro, does that matter in any way? I tried going into rest mode, powered it off, restarted it, but there’s no update available…
And what do you mean ‘caching inbetween our servers and your machine’? What can I do?
I might be being stupid, but is there a trick to getting access to the beta version, as I am running the latest release ( v3.78.0) on a PS4, but I don’t see the
Enter Early Access
option anywhere
(am running Plex home if that makes any difference)
I have no idea how that’s possible. Plex settings don’t show any updates made, but it’s working now
. I’m outty
@Donatus1989 Sorry, should have clarified. This is an app update, not a platform update. App updates can be pushed by us without requiring the console app itself to be updated via the store.
@blim5001 The early access period is now over, and the app is now available to everyone.
@moussa Again, how do you explain that I’ve always been able to Direct Play interlaced DVR recordings on the previous version then? I’ve been doing this with the same setup for well over a year. I lost that ability as soon as the new update was pushed out. I’ve uploaded a short recording from a channel that I’ve routinely recorded and Direct Played Sample. Of course I can no longer confirm myself that it would play on the old version since I don’t have it, but I’m 100% confident that it would since every other one has. Note too that Plex flags the files as 1080p even though they are 1080i, that has always been the case even though all Australian HD broadcasts are 1080i.
It appears with 3.78.0 an old bug has been re-introduced (from about a year ago?). Mono AAC playback is no longer working, produces no audio. I just updated my server release to 1.14.0.5470 to see if that was related, but it did not fix it.
So, when this app update was released, I was aghast at the new interface. It was a massive change, and really, it’s more difficult to use, and slower by far. I was already planning to ditch my PS4 altogether, but I’m afraid of switching to “lesser” hardware now and having to wait even longer if this is how the new version behaves…
That being said, I did finally get used to it, and tried to play some things. But I’m now getting constant buffering issues on most of my titles that played just fine before.
I’m using a WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra, so transcoding on the fly has always been an issue. But previously, I would just convert problem files to ‘tv’ or ‘mobile’, and just hitting the ‘share’ button directly would play the best file automagically, and it would just work.
Now… you’ve changed the ‘play from list’ button from ‘share’ to ‘square’, which is annoying enough, but when I use that, it just buffers constantly. If I go into the page for the movie itself then go to the … menu and choose to play a different version, no matter what I select, it will buffer constantly as well.
Today I finally noticed a new update was released for my plex app on my wd mycloud ex2, and even after installing it, I have the same problems…
Why the heck would an update like this be released that basically cripples playback on consoles. I have to assume it’s the app on the PS4, since the app on the wd mycloud didn’t change at the same time… and the version on the nas has been updated after several weeks of hell, and didn’t fix anything.
What’s going on here? I finally bought a lifetime plex pass in June after years of flawless free use, and prodding to do so by several of my friends who have been happy plex users for years, and within 5 months, it’s completely broken. There seems to be no end in sight for this issue, as it was among many raised before the last supposed update by (APPARENTLY YOU CAN ONLY TAG 5 USERS PER POST, WTF???) @CrowleyAJ @LeGritche @Missekat @terrorbear @esalgado_alu_ucam_edu
