The problem is that trying to play any previously recorded show usually results in a black screen with no audio, or sometimes a frozen first frame where audio continues to be heard. Sometimes you will see weird green bars and pixelation.
The other problem is trying to watch any Live TV channel, it will play for a second, then buffer, then play for a second, then buffer, and it keeps repeating.
We watched Live TV and previously recorded shows last night on Roku, so the issue definitely started just today, and although I also upgraded my Plex Media Server from Catalina to Big Sur today, I am leaning toward the latest Roku update (though I am not against looking at the Mac mini too).
All signs that either I have a poor network connection or the server cannot keep up…
…But then downloaded shows and movies playback fine, at least the ones I have tried so far. So I was thinking maybe it is an MPEG2 problem, and maybe the Roku app updated last night (saw another thread mentioning MPEG2 issues with 6.7.9).
Also, I tried playing back previously recorded shows and Live TV on Apple TV, iPhone, and Web Browser, and they all work flawlessly, so again leaning towards the Roku.
Here is my troubleshooting, none of which have worked:
- Rebooted Roku, Mac Mini, Network Switches and Router, & HDHomeRun Quatro for the hell of it
- Swapped ethernet cables with the Apple TV
- Tried installing the Roku beta app on Roku
- Tried disabling Direct Play and Direct Stream
