Plex for Windows Is Stuttering In Direct Play

Why uninstall PMP? Do you think it’s incompatible? And my GPU drivers are definitely up to date. I have also made sure that no program is interfering with Plex for Windows, just to rule out external influence.

Just to eliminate all possibilities. After reinstalling the intel drivers utilization of the IGPU goes up to 75% for direct play if I use the IGPU or if plex media player uses nvidia for playback, back to the stuttering.

So whats causing this problem and whats the solution?

Bit of up an update for me. Since I have Plex Media Player that has both the TV mode and the Windows 10 format here is what fixed it for me. I had the latest server beta version installed as reference, but that wasn’t the solution. The solution was going into to TV mode in the app and selection your profile name to get into the option. Once in the options go to main and select the Native Open GL Option, so this means Plex in the Windows 10 version by default isn’t working properly with Open GL without that workaround. Works perfect now.

That only changes the Plex Media Player app, not the Plex for Windows app. Apparently Plex for Windows is already using OpenGL by default.

Go download Plex Media Player (for Windows Home Theater PCs). There is a windows app view and a Tv view. Do what I described and just switch back to the Windows view and it will work perfectly.

I have Plex Media Player. Plex Media Player is entirely separate from Plex for Windows, and turning on OpenGL for Plex Media Player does nothing to help the stuttering issues in Plex for Windows.

Server Version#:1.19.4.2865
Player Version#:1.11.0.1215-1d8c460c

Since switching from PMP 4.56 to Plex for Windows v1.11 on two laptops and a desktop, I’m seeing stuttering on any video played, as others have said it occurs every 3 -10 seconds for approx. 1 second.
I have switched on debug logging while I’m playing a video to see if anything is showing there, but nothing is obvious from the logs.
The PMS cpu is about 3 - 10% while direct playing, the client cpu is around 20%

I still have PMP installed, as a test I set PMP playing the same video at the same time as Plex for Windows on each laptop. PMP was able to play the video perfectly, whereas PfW was stuttering

Also I noticed while using Plex for Windows just having the app open - the PMS server logs are being filled up with errors every 10 seconds caused by the client:

ERROR - Unable to find client profile for device; platform=windows, platformVersion=10.0.19041, device=, model=standalone

Running older versions of PfW also shows the same error in the logs and the stuttering during playback.

Hopefully a Plex Team Member will be able to dig into this and find out what is causing it and resolve it, especially as PMP is supposedly going TV mode only soon

While I see the same messages as you for Plex for windows, which implies that Open GL is enabled, feels like the implementation is not done right.
PMP with native Open GL enabled there’s very little stuttering (I say very little, because I still see some in 4k movies), Plex for windows does not reflect the same.

Its true. Using PMP with Native OpenGL option removes stuttering in PMP. Going to use PMP desktop mode for now…

Unfortunately, I had no sucess with reinstalling the nvidia and intel drivers

I have been doing my best to not post but I have been dealing with stutter lately also and thought maybe my drive was damaged. I then thought nothing of it after replacing it but I still see the micro stutters. I did uninstall Plex Windows and tried the Plex For Windows 7 installer and had no micro stutters.

I again uninstalled Plex for Windows 7 and reinstalled Plex for Windows and the micro stuttering is back. I hope this is fixed in a timely manner as the Windows 7 one said it will not be updated if I read it correctly.

You need to grab Plex Media Player on the downloads page and enable open GL native support on the TV view.

Again, that doesn’t do anything for Plex for Windows. This discussion is about Plex for Windows, not Plex Media Player.

Not a real solution but may help some of you. If you have both a dedicated GPU and an iGPU available, try switching to the latter. To do so, you have to open your Windows Settings, then go to System > Display > Graphic settings and add the Plex app exe. At this point you can choose if you want to run the app in Performance mode or Power Saving mode, which will then run the app through the iGPU.

This fixed the stuttering issue for me, but I’m not sure how many of you can benefit from this procedure.

You’re right the iGPU from my i7 has no stuttering but if I switch back to my actual GPU the micro stutters reappear. I even tried updating all my drivers just as a precaution and it still did nothing. They have made some change sthat is causing a bad relay between GPUs and the software. I hope this is fixed as I would much rather use my dedicated GPU then my CPU.

This worked on my Surfacebook, running Plex on the iGPU not the Nvidia GPU.
However on my other laptop which only has an iGPU I still see the stutter.
Also the Plex server logs are full of errors using the Plex for Windows regarding client profile not found

This worked for me. Though the menus in the Plex app are very slow and stuttery now, the movies seem to play fine. Before I got stutter every 10 sec or so during playback.

So thanks for the workaround.

I have the same problem and this post helped me fix it: Stuttering on Plex for Windows

Thanks for sharing! For me the iGPU workaround works for the moment.
