Plex for Windows - Offline Playback Not Functional

Server Version#: 1.25.7.5604-980a13e02
Player Version#: 1.41.0.2876-e960c9ca

I have recently begun using Plex to manage my library, & have an active Plex pass subscription. Ive tried numerous searches and scoured the settings on my media server and the desktop software, but to no avail. The linked article suggests this should be working, & there is a “library” to see downloaded movies or shows, but the shows and movies are not providing an option to download for offline playback. Is there a setting im missing??

Media server is running on Windows server 2016;
Computer is Windows 10 Enterprise
All recent updates installed for both Windows and Plex.

You can download your personal media.

You cannot download any of the online streaming content provided by Plex.

Do you see the download button on the movie pre-play page?

While downloading, there will be a spinning circle around the Activity icon. The movie will also be visible in the Downloads section.

I do not have that option anywhere. This is stored on my plex media server, and that is the admin user for the system. No option to even download the file to my pc.

What account appears on Settings → Server_Name → General, as the owner of the server.

It appears to be different than the account you’re using on the forum. Notice the J on the server and H on the forum.

The owner of the server must have a Plex Pass.

I think he just uses a different username on forums.

Q: in that app if you go to your account settings, does it show your account has a Plex Pass Wrench icon > Account {on left side}

Doh! Forgot about checking there. Thanks.

Hill.Justin is my username for my account.
Justin is the Display name in Plex, so my name shows in the list of users, instead of what it showed before (Hill.Jus). I have no idea how I changed it though

Still logging in using the same username and password. I only have one account, i never signed up for anything extra to use the forums, it just logged me into my existing account.

It sure does! I can download for offline playback on my iPhone no problem at all, the issue only lies within the Plex for Windows software, & that is where i want it to work because Im a trucker about to head out for a month. Connecting my laptop to my TV in the truck is a lot easier than connecting my phone to it. Remote playback works perfectly fine outside of my home network, however that will consume all of my phones data in no time, & im not guaranteed reliable wifi at the truck stops, hense my strong desire to have this function work.
Plex for Windows:

Plex Web on server locally

Can you go to the Debug area of settings and hit “restore defaults” button this should reset the app and hopefully it will pick up your PP properly. (It won’t affect your server settings but you will need to re-pin your preferred library/sources to home sidebar)

Ive done that and restarted the app, still not giving me an option to download for offline

Two ideas:

  1. plex.ini
  • Exit the app if running.
  • Go to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex
  • Rename plex.ini to plex.ini.old
  • Relaunch the app. You’ll have to login again, re-pin libraries, etc.
  1. Full uninstall.
  • Exit the app.
  • Uninstall via normal windows uninstaller (control panel → Programs & Features, etc).
  • Delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex
  • Reboot laptop.
  • Download a new copy from plex.tv and install.

Tried both ideas, still no luck

I tried installing the software on a different desktop PC. That also lacks the ability to download for offline playback. Is this a flaw in the software, or is there a problem with my account/media server?

@Hill_Justin We’ve investigated and found the issue and are looking at how best to resolve it for yourself and other users affected. In the mean time I’ve manually lit up the feature for you, so if you try again now it should all be working.

Awesome! Keep me updated on a permanent solution if you will. In the meantime, I do see the option is now available to download. Thanks!

This should now be resolved for any other affected users. Thanks for reporting the issue!
