Plex has ONE job. to play media. yet it's a F'n crap shoot if it'll do that

Yea, I’ve said I’ve randomly had the issue where it would start to load a video and stop at 33%, but a restart of server and the video would play. SO similar result but obviously not the same cause as that solution isn’t solving it this time. and Emby has presented no issues playing my media files. THE same media files.

Dude. I just told you. Twice.

It’s not the files. It’s the codecs that are struggling.

Your permissions are wrong, which is causing some transcoding errors
Your networking is misconfigured, which is causing some clients to not connect properly and giving you the insecure connection bit

This has nothing to do with media files.

OK, what brings you to that conclusion? and If that was the case, again. as my network and configuration hasn’t changed, my permissions hasn’t changed Would I not have been experiencing issues for the past year?

Show me the evidence. you know more than me. Let me see more than your opinion.

I read your logs? I’m guessing you haven’t.

ok, show me where in the logs. and the fact that some devices can play the files while other cant through plex. Also makes your ignorant opinion null. Or your interpretation of the logs.

codec issues right here

Hey, lookie here, The same files not playing through plex on my TV is playing through Emby, From the same host machine, Through the same network. with all the same configurations. all the same ■■■■■■■ PERMISSIONS. also able to play directly from media player.

Man. Just because you have Emby configured right, does NOT mean you have Plex configured right. They’re different apps, with different configuration requirements. Just because you don’t understand why it’s not working, does not mean it is an issue with the software.

Yea, ok. all that means is PLEX is having issues with that file. It shouldn’t need to transcode. It should be able to direct play.

Has it been years, or 1 year or 2 weeks?

It sounds like it’s been a problem for longer than you care to admit and “nothing has changed on my network” isn’t a fantastic example of troubleshooting

You have repeatedly stated that Emby working is evidence that your network is configured properly. In fact, Emby working while Plex doesn’t is evidence that your network is NOT configured correctly

Plex and Emby don’t work the same way. Emby works without internet access while Plex needs to reach out to Plex.tv. This is exactly why all of your apps are failing but you can reach the server directly

What you’ve essentially done is partially configured Plex to work without internet which shouldn’t be necessary

Yes, you are having problems WITH Plex, but that doesn’t mean that Plex is causing the problem

Rakongai is correct. You have decided what the problem ISN’T before you know exactly what the problem IS.

You don’t understand how these things work is the core issue here. It isn’t a permissions issue with the media folder. The media content is fine. Nobody has once said the media content is an issue.

Do you want this fixed? Cause you are refusing to take every offer of help you have been given.

Sue me I don’t remember the exact date I’ve transferred my server over to Truenas from windows server. As if the discrepancy of if it was a year or two years makes any difference.
Really, I’m done debating the issue with arrogant dumbasses with more opinions than knowledge.

Also - do you know why and when plex transcodes? You can’t just set direct play and have it never ever do transcoding unless your media content is optimized for it.

So here is the difference between your plex and emby setups.

Your plex is not configured correctly and has permissions issues (because of configuration) so when it goes to play certain media, and needs to transcode (needs to, regardless of you setting direct play, which isn’t a magic settings) it can’t. Cause configuration

Emby doesn’t have the same configuration, cause it’s not made by the same people. Your configuration for Emby probably doesn’t have issues. So when Emby has to transcode (has to) it can, cause it’s setup properly.

That’s a fantastic description of yourself. Start listening to the suggestions you’re given instead of deciding you’re the smartest guy in the room

Remember, you’re the guy who can’t get his server to work.

These aren’t…opinions?

Plex doesn’t use the apps user or group. So having that user/group set with read/write doesn’t make a difference. So when it goes to create files it needs for transcoding, it can’t. Because, well. you know. Permissions issues. Stemming from a configuration issue. Stemming from a user who has an issue with refusing help.

Well if I was provided valid relevant suggestions that I havn’t already eliminated as the cause by anyone with basic troubleshooting comprehension. And yes, I’m the one with the issue and I’m the one that’ll solve it by my damn.

Lol - okay. Have fun. Let us know when you learn about how permissions work. and transcoding. and networking. And codecs.

We could literally have you back up and running inside of, idk. 30 minutes? But I guess have fun. This arrogant dumbass who literally works on servers for a living is signing off.

No actually I made supervisor, Now I own my own business doing contract work for multiple companies managing their IT working from home 90% of the time. and It’s already fixed. Went back to the earlier version of Plex that was working.
