Plex HDHomerun DVR "HD Only" resolution not working

So, I have a bunch of recordings set from last year, mostly DC shows, TWD, Dragon Ball Super, etc. I noticed that my Dragon Ball Super Eps were coming in SD. When I switched the advanced settings to record resolution “HD Only” it changes to “No Upcoming Airings” even though the guide clearly shows an HD airing for this Saturday.

All my other shows are set to “HD Only” and they all say “No Upcoming Airings.” Now, to test for consistency I decided to change The Walking Dead to “Any” resolution and sure enough, it detects an upcoming episode next week.

The only way around this is the keep the resolution on “Any” but limit the channel to the HD channel; which is a hassle, since “HD Only” is a DVR rule that applies to all recordings instead of manually limited each recording to it’s specific HD channel.

So I guess this a bug submission. I’ll attach pics for clarification even though I think I was pretty detailed.

Imgur Album of 3 screenshots. Descriptions explain what each one is showing. In the last screen show (set to HD only) you can see “Dragon Ball Super” in bottom right of screenshot showing “no upcoming airings.”

Thank you for your detailed post. I think I have replicated the issue and will be discussing it with the development team

My test did not exact;y replicate what you got. In my case, it jad actually switched to the SD channel instead of the HD channel. However when i modified the recording settings in advanced to select the specific HD channel, it did show up.

I think it is the same. In your case it did switch channels as well to 257 instead of 757

I have the exact same problem. I noticed it a few weeks ago when I tried to record a new show. I then checked the rest of my shows and discovered there were no HD airings listed under recordings even though they were in the guide. I had to implement the same workaround. It works fine when recording new episodes only but not so well when trying to record all episodes of an older series that runs on four different channels.

Hi

I spent more time on this to replicate the issue and look at diagnostics
In my tests the only time i managed to get it to end up with No upcoming Airings was when I selected recording option Resolution set to HD Only and the actual episode on the HD Channel was 480 and not 720 - Even when selecting Limit to channel and specifying the HD channel - i still ended up with no upcoming airings for the fact that the only airing was 480

To progress I would like to see some logs of this from your system an would like to see xml for specific requests relating to the airings. The exact syntax of the request ca only be determined once i have seen your server logs. You would need to add X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxx to the requests and you can find out what your server security is by following instructions here https://support.plex.tv/articles/204059436-finding-an-authentication-token-x-plex-token/

I just noticed an issue with another show I have set to record. There is an HD listing in the guide for the show. The problem is, if I choose “HD Only” under “Resolution”, Plex doesn’t find it. On top of this, unlike most of my other shows, the HD channel that is listed in the guide to air the show doesn’t show up under the “Limit to channel” drop down. The only way to record it is to set the “Resolution” to “Any” but then it only sees the SD version. I have downloaded the server logs and I have my Plex token, I’m just not sure how to get you the “xml for specific requests relating to the airings” I attached screenshots of the show settings.

Also have the same issue of HD only shows no upcoming recording but I can select the HD channel. This working a couple revisions ago. I have tried a new install with a fresh install DB and still having the issue.

Same issue here, a number of my shows started recording in SD even though the HD show would show up in search and could be watched live.

When I switched to Resolution HD Only (and Limit To Channel Any) I would get No Upcoming Recordings.

Setting resolution back to Any and limiting to the HD only channel seems to work, but this isn’t a great solution for shows which routinely air on different channels (e.g. NYR Hockey is on NBCSN, MSG, and MSG2 just this week)

Agree with mbppg this is a recent regression, happy to grab logs or try anything to assist in debugging.

I got my plex token but don’t see where I’m supposed to paste it. Is there a URL that I paste this after like the article shows?

I also downloaded all my logs but don’t see anything pertaining to DVR/HDHomeRun.

What i wanted to do is get the logs from you. Identify the lines in the logs that relate to this. The logs need to cover the time when the grid is refreshed and including the sequence of selecting a show that appears as HD and selecting the HD Only option and all channels - with screenshots showing the time as well so i can link to the logs.

When i find the specific log entries i will then explain to you how to amend the request and get the xml for me for subsequent similar recording. The token you can send me by private message and i will then include it my instructions which i would send you by private message

This seems to be the same issue I’m seeing - also HDHomeRun tuners and HD Only results in no scheduled recordings for that show. My workaround is generally to set each show to record from a specific HD channel. However, for 2 shows (Criminal Minds and Family Guy), that workaround doesn’t work, because the Limit to Channel dropdown doesn’t show the correct channels (it’s showing a couple channels with frequent reruns of the show, but not the first-runs), so I can only record those in SD :frowning:

@sa2000 did you get the logs you need? looking to see if this is being worked on from the developer side of things. Please let us know if you need anything to help move this forward.

It looks like Plex grabs the channel list when you initially setup the recording and doesn’t refresh the list each time you try to edit the recording. I added a few shows in the “off-season”. The reruns for the shows are on one channel and the new airings are on another. I needed to delete the recording and recreate it. As long as the new airings are listed in the guide at the time you create the recording, you will be able to select that channel.

Thanks, darc50. That allowed me to set the shows to the appropriate channel. At least that workaround for the original issue works

As far as I know I did not !

Basically I was unable to reproduce the issue. The evidence I need is to see the XML being returned for what is in the guide at the time of scheduling a recording for only HD and it gets recorded as SD (or vice versa)

From the logs I would identify a couple of requests that you can make in a browser - I would give full instructions on what to do

Here are my logs if it helps. Plex Media Server Logs_2018-10-08_17-29-31.zip (4.0 MB)

Thanks - I need a bit of help - like times

What I am after are logs capturing the sequence so that we can get the xml for the same sequence later

So logs to capture:

  • Loading the grid
  • identifying an airing that is in SD on one channel and HD in another that would soon after
  • scheduling the recording and clicking on Show Advanced,
  • selecting resolution as HD Only
  • Leaving Limit to Channel as default ie Any
  • Clicking Record

Noting the time of doing this and what channel/program

  • waiting for recording to start
  • capturing logs and letting me know the time. channel, progtam

Sure. I will do this first thing in the morning, I have three shows recording for the next couple hours and only three tuners. Busy TV show night. I will get you the logs however as requested.

Log from this morning: Plex Media Server Logs_2018-10-09_04-40-35.zip (3.1 MB)

Steps to reproduce and time I did this was about 4:40 am:

  1. I opened guide and clicked on channels and then clicked on news to bring up news listings
  2. I selected “9 news First at 4:30am” on channel 9 (KUSA) and also available on 653 (KUSADT) HD version

3 I selected advanced and selected HD only
4. I selected record
5. I then looked in recording priority and the 9 News First at 4:30 am and it shows no upcoming recordings and also did not start to record

I also checked the server activity icon and there was no activity. If I go back and deselect HD only and go to channel and select 653 the HD it will start to record right away.
