Plex Intermittently boots to frozen empty home screen

Server Version: Version 1.30.0.6486
Player version: 9.13.0.37059

Within the last week I’m having an intermittent problem with both my shield clients. The Client boots to an empty home screen that just says “No Items to Display this directory appears to be empty.” The interface is completely frozen and I can’t do anything other than force close the app. Launching the app again just results in the same broken interface. Rebooting the shield also doesn’t make a difference.

If I come back to it some hours later it may work, it may not. There doesn’t appear to be much of any rhyme or reason to when it does and does not work.

I of course don’t have any client logs because when the problem occurs I can’t get into the settings to turn on logging…

What’s interesting is if you wait you can see my pinned libraries pop up on the left hand side but the interface never unfreezes.

Anyone else running into this?

I see there’s a new beta that supposedly addresses crashing at startup, but it isn’t showing as available for me yet in the play store. Once I get the new version I’ll monitor and post back.

I get this when I switch User accounts. Using the Back key will usually expose the left-side menu and I can move to a different library, which usually clears it up for that session.

ah yeah i missed that thread. glad I’m not alone. I’ll have to try some of those suggestions.

I had made some firewall rule changes related to plex right around the same time this started happening so i was trying to figure out if I caused it or if it was a bug.

The Plex Android TV client app is always logging.

Enabling network logging in the app settings allows access to the logs. It does not enable/disable actual logging.

The setting is persistent. If enabled, you can restart the device and it will still be enabled afterwards.

A device restart does not clear the logs.

At least we have a colourful Plex banner to watch.

Ok I can give this a try. It’s better in the newest beta but it still happens occasionally. But as suggested above I can hit back on the remote and regain control of the interface that way now at least.

I ran into the frozen home page problem last night, after installing the latest beta.

Even with the home page frozen I was able to pull client logs.

I force quit the Plex app then relaunched and it worked as expected.

client-log.txt (4.7 MB)
I edited out my IP address from the logs as it’s a static and I don’t want to be advertising it.

I turned my TV on about an hour or so ago (4-430 CST) and experienced the empty home screen again.

It appears to be failing to connect to my remote server frequently? I see a lot of connection errors which is interesting as that’s where I stream from 99% of the time unless I’m doing 4k remux, then its the local server on the lan.

I have no noticeable issues with connectivity to that server besides the initial home screen being empty. But after backing out to the server list and back into my home view its fixed.

Can confirm I have this issue, too.
It works fine on the kids’ Nokia smart TV’s with Android TV + plex app.

Solution, for now, is to press the back button once… that unfreezes everything.

Not exactly stoked since I just introduced individual users in the household and then it doesn’t function flawlessly. =)

I think this is an app issue as oppose a server issue, the update before the new plex startup, with the sound, works and all pinned libraries shown without any missing for a few seconds. Not sure if anyone wants to roll back to an earlier version and confirm the same thing? Hopefully this can get fixed or reverted back.

Definitely seems to be an Android TV app issue. I use Roku, Android Mobile and iOS clients and don’t have this issue.

Similar issue: Android TV: Doesn't connect to the server if not exited entirely

Any progress on this? Starting to get some friends and family not knowing whats going on.

The latest beta (9.14.0.37777-beta) for Android TV appears to have fixed this for me.

Thanks for the report, the fix will be available in the next version, 9.14.0. It’s is scheduled to be released next week.

Yes this appears to have fixed it for me as well. It’s still rather slow to load the home screen compared to before though.

Try the latest beta that’s just been added, load up times seem to be super fast compared to before.
