Plex is incorrectly naming TV episodes even though the file name is correct

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7775

For the life of me I can not get Plex to correctly associate TV episodes with the correct information. You can’t use to the “fix match” at the episode level (dumb), so I’m kinda at the mercy of what it comes up with short of manually updating dozens and dozens of episodes. Does anyone have any suggestions? Heres what it’s doing:

I have the following files in my TV library:
/multimedia/tv/Star Trek - The Next Generation (1987)/Season 01/Star Trek - The Next Generation - s01e01-e02 - Encounter at Farpoint.mkv
/multimedia/tv/Star Trek - The Next Generation (1987)/Season 01/Star Trek - The Next Generation - S01E03 - The Naked Now.mp4

Now, the first file correctly loads the metadata for the first 2-part episode "Encounter at Farpoint’. BUT the server lists the next file as “The Naked Now” as episode #2 and when you click on it, it loads Encounter at Farpoint. Even though the file data SHOWS it’s the S01E03 episode.

What episode order have you set for this library (or the individual show)? It appears TMDb is listing the pilot double-episode (encounter at farpoint) as a single episode (s01e01 instead of s01e01-e02).

Thats interesting. Since TMDb has errors like that, is there any way to work around it?

It’s not an error persay. One of TMDB core rules is to list episodes order as they originally aired. As this episode aired as a 2 hour feature length episode their ordering is correct based on their bible. See Reported Problem for Encounter at Farpoint (1x1) - Discuss Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Movie Database (TMDB) for additional details if your interested.

Plex allows you to change the episode ordering between tmdb and tvdb. At the show level select edit and then the advanced tab and change the episode ordering to what you desire, most likely TheTVDB (Aired) for this example.

The refresh the metadata of the show and you should be good.
