I’ve had this question posted in the “forums” since March 2nd. With no kind of assistance. I was hoping to get some direction here?
When I sort my movies by actor it doesn’t pull up all of their movies. For example
Anthony Mackie is missing a few
He’s not pulling up in 8-Mile & Love The Coopers
Eminem is not pulling up in “The Wash” & “Funny People”
Ben Affleck is not pulling up in “He’s Just Not That Into You”. There is probably more with each actor.
I have tried
-Refreshing
-Refreshing all of my movies
-Tried The Movie Database. (currently using Freebase)
-got rid of the movie and put it back.
-Compared data with Freebase.org (its correct there)
If actors are important to you you shouldn’t use Freebase. It pulls the actors in the wrong order afaik, that is, from A-Z instead of Main Actor - Support cast that the movie database does. So, even though it’s not fun to redownload all metadata I’d suggest that we start with rebuilding the library set to themoviedatabase and under settings have it also at the top, above freebase. Just changing it doesn’t affect anything, you do have to force a download of new metadata sorry to say.
I had to do a redownload for all metadata and change to Freebase based on what Plex help told me to do because I wasn’t getting any of my trailers. The redownload worked to get me my trailers but now your saying that I have to do a “redownload” again to fix the casting?! Then I’ll probably be missing my trailers again. Frustrating.
I would prefer another answer. Since I tried The movie database anyway (like I said above) and it didn’t do anything. It didn’t work for me then. I took the movie all the way off and brought it back. (redownloading the metadata for it)
Hm. I must say, I haven’t followed that issue and can’t make a statement regarding how to proceed further. All I know is that for a time now, Freebase has listed the actors in A-Z order and the moviedatabase in Main cast - Supporting cast. I’ll see what I can come up with.
I’ve confirmed that you should be able to use freebase for your trailers, but set the movie database above in priority - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558 - so that the actor data comes from there. There doesn’t exist any either-or choices.
When I had Freebase Secondary. It wouldn’t pull the trailers. I don’t know why but that was the problem. If you would like here is my post on the matter. (its quite lengthy) https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/193988/most-of-my-trailers-and-extra-features-are-missing#latest
If I put it secondary again, I don’t forsee any change there. I will most likely lose my trailers and extras if I make freebase secondary again.
Also, It shouldn’t matter the order it pulls the actors. It should just pull them correct? It shouldn’t matter if I want to sort my movies by movies that star Zooey Deschanel than those movies should populate. Are you saying that Plex only pulls the first few actors in a movie? Thats not correct because here is an example.
I sorted by Zooey Descanel and one of her movies that she is in is called “Your Highness”. Even though it doesn’t show her listed she is actually in this movie. It pulls it correctly. It does pull them A-Z but it also recognizes that Zooey is in this movie. If I were to go by just listing then (Freebase.com) has her listed as the 7th actor/actress in the movie as well. In the movie 8-Mile Anthony Mackie is the 6th Listed and his name starts with an A.
What really per"plex"s me is that one of Steve Carrell’s most obscure appearances in a movie was “Curly Sue”. It picked that up and pulls it no problem. If it can do that than I’m pretty sure it should be pulling Anthony Mackie in 8-Mile.
If you view the XML for the Star Trek: Into Darkness does it have her listed there?
I use Freebase for my library and never switched to theMovieDB (Simply because I don’t really search for the actors/actress because with larger servers most of the apps get overloaded trying to list them all)
The XML showing that the actors are missing means the information isn’t in the server. When I look at my xml for the movie (And I have it in two different libraries both with the same extras and actors) I have way more (98 total) than the 10 you have listed.
Refreshing the item (If this works you might also look at doing a refresh all in the library to get everything back up to par)
Unmatching the item and rematching it
If after refreshing you can also check your plugin log for themoviedb/freebase to see if there is an error occuring when pulling the metadata.
This is how I have my Freebase agent setup, I moved themoviedb above freebase because I wanted the collections back in the day, but as I mentioned above these filters don’t work too well for me with larger libraries so I dont use them anymore. This should also arrange the cast in a better importance :
Ok, I get stuck on option #1.
I cleared themoviedb cache. But I cannot find a freebase cache. Is it named something out of the ordinary? Maybe this is causing the problem?

You are correct about the 10 actors listed. I have double checked my other movies and each movie that I have checked the XML code, it only lists 10 actors and then stops.
