I’m tired of gambling with my free time and wasting my time and my families time. These buffering issues REALLY sour me on Plex as a whole.
EVERY single time I want to watch something now I’m gambling if what I’m watching will actually complete without a buffer loop happening.
My family is fed up and won’t even try and watch anything on plex anymore cause it is pointless.
The issues make ZERO sense why does a movie play fine for 5-20 mins with no issues and then just buffer forever? If you hit the back button and then start the video where you left off it again plays fine for another 5-20 mins.
When it is buffering NO network traffic is being sent from the server to the Xbox, it’s like some memory threshold is reached and either the server or the Xbox drops all network traffic between each other.
It is also Ridiculous that we have not heard from ANY plex dev on these issues in months. I’ve PM’d @Moussa several times and nothing but silence.
Why can’t plex support their product? An entire platform is a broken mess and they just ignore it.
Everything is fine, everything is up to date, Plex buffers endlessly after 5-20 mins of 4k HDR files regardless of Audio codec being used. Hit the Back button and then resume where you left off and it will play for another 5-20 mins until it endlessly buffers. It does this on Direct play streams. I’ve already spent months going back and fourth with MS and Plex, sending logs, files that reproduce the issue filing reports on the Xbox.
MS and Plex put out an OS and Plex server fix in March that corrected this issue but it recently came back and now Plex devs won’t speak up on it. Was very disappointed to see this exact bug that WAS fixed crop up again out of nowhere.
This is NOT a config or SETUP issue, this is not an issue an end user can work around or fix themself. This is a programmatic bug with how Plex and Xbox interact when streaming 4k HDR video files.
This requires Plex and MS devs to work together figure out the platform bug issue and fix it.
But seems now Plex devs won’t respond to threads or PM’s on this matter even though multiple people have reported it.
Today I was playing a 1080p rip I made of The Doors feast of friends, played perfectly for 29 mins then bam buffer loop. Been awhile since I had issue with 1080P material but it seems not immune.
Like I said using plex is a complete gamble now and more than likely anything you play will be hit with a buffer loop during playback
I’ve already been through the basic troubleshooting tips/tricks, I’ve already sent Plex Logs when this issue first cropped up last year. Plex and MS previously fixed this issue. The problem is this particular bug has returned.
The answer to all his questions is yes I’ve check all of these and they are all configured correctly and my PC running plex server is a Core I7 with 16GB ram. Everything is running on the latest version, the issues happen locally and I only have issues with rhe Xbox client, any other clients run any material fine.
This is NOT a user config issue, this is NOT an issue that can be corrected by community help.
This is literally an issue within the code of the Plex Server/Xbox Plex client/Xbox OS that needs to be addressed by Plex and MS dev’s
I’m making thread to try and get some response from the actual Plex Devs who are supposed to be reading this forum
I’ve also been filing reports on my Xbox when this buffering loop appears. So far no one at MS or Plex has responded to these latest issues that has cropped up.
I was at a friend of mine’s trying to setup my server on his xbox one and yeha same issue.
Was playing some anime (1080p, mkv format) and despite the fact the network is more than capable it kept buffering every 10 secs or so. We gave up on it.
Swapped to the PS4, seems to work with minor crashes.
I have plex running in a docker on unraid on a gigabit network. This is local so the firewall/ports/DNS are irrelevant. Plex server and app are both up to date. Within the past few months something happened and 1080p videos start buffering endlessly. You have to stop the movie and resume from where you left off for it to work again. Sometimes it happens like 1hr into the movie and it only does it once. Sometimes it’s every 15 minutes. It worked fine for years and all of a sudden something changed. I can watch the same movie on my chromecast ultra with no buffering. It’s something with the xbox app itself.
Yep @romanodog I’m having the exact same issue, especially telling if you get this buffer issue and hit the back button you can start where you left of until the next endless buffer problem for me. I can’t get past 30 mins on any video, Was only a 4k issues now I’m seeing issues with 1080P this cropped up in the last 2 months or so.
I can play these same videos that have buffer issues on several different android devices in original quality walking around my house with no problems. As noted this is solely a client issue with the Xbox version of Plex
It’s also funny it is doing the exact thing as before last year where when the buffer issue happens their is ZERO network traffic between the server and the Xbox. If it was truly buffering it should be sending packets in this process. It is like the Xbox client just cuts off all network traffic and won’t work again until the session is killed and restarted from the Xbox client.
I hope people can understand this is not a network/server config issue, we are talking about an actual bug in the code of Plex, Plex client for Xbox and or the Xbox OS causing this.
Have you tried to uninstall the Plex app off of your Xbox and reinstall? Also - make sure that it resides on the internal vs an external drive if you have one connected to the Xbox.
I’m pretty much resorting to buying several hard drives copying my Movies/TV files to it plugging these new hard drives directly to my main TV and having to watch movies directly from my TV’s default Video app. Luckily my TV’s default video app can correctly Display 4k HDR and pass 5.1 audio through the optical output.
Plex has failed myself and my family, no one in my house will even bother to load up Plex to try and watch anything cause they get tired of the buffering loops.
None of the online FAQS have helped and Plex relying on community help for what is obviously a total Platform bug is ridiculous.
Yea sucks we are being ignored, if you can please make as many bug reports on your Xbox as possible and PM @moussa your issue. Maybe if enough people complain it will get fixed
Another one with a hardwired connection between my Mac and the xbox and all I’m getting is constant buffering - its so frustrating as iPads, phones and pretty much everything else streams perfectly - Im really starting to lose faith with Plex and I’ve only just signed up for a lifetime membership and am really regretting my decision as I can’t use Plex in the main place for me to consume media
I have this issue but only when using the Xbox One client. My server is a 1600x with 16 GB of RAM running CentOS7, it never has any major resource load. This never happens when using the browser on my desktop. It happens more on some files than others but I haven’t found any correlation and subs enabled or not seems to not matter.
If someone could tell me what kind of debug logging I can report, I’ll make a submission.
I Have this exact issue only on Xbox one. I have recent upgraded to GPU P2000 transcoding and since then the xbox will buffer and hang and will require it to be restarted before doing it again. When i go back to CPU transcoding… fine … and it has been fine for 2 years. Only since going to GPU xbox fails…
I just bought Plex Pass few days ago cause the discount, and looking to buy a Xbox One S for watching movies on TV. Very concern about issues of Plex on Xbox.
I am not a expert of these stuffs. May I ask if using Kodi on Xbox can solve these problem?
If this is a stupid question, forgive me please. I am learning.
I’ve been getting something similar lately, except I can’t resume watching anything. To be clear, I’m not getting an endless buffering issue, just buffering in general that does resume on its own. However, if I stop watching something and try to resume it, I get an endless buffer. Not being able to continue watching something that I’ve previously started is a major issue. This is only happening on Xbox, and on every Xbox I own. I’ve been a plex user on Xbox since the beginning and have been a plex pass member since then (3-4 years ago?), but I’m seriously considering cancelling my plex pass and moving on to Kodi or something else. It seems Plex is more concerned lately with putting out new features than making sure the basics are working properly.
