Plex is using two files for the same show, but only plays one

Server Version#: 1.25.2.5319
Player Version#: 4.72.0

I have the X Files and The Lone Gunman as TV shows served up from my media server. Initially, I had The Lone Gunman set up as Season 8X under the Xfiles folder, but recently moved it out since it was mixing up Lone Gunman episodes in with X Files season 1 episodes. Now that I’ve moved it out, I noticed The Lone Gunman episodes don’t show up any more, but if I look for file details, it shows both under the X Files episodes still.

I’ve tried scanning, optimizing, rebooting, but nothing seems to fix this. Any suggestions?

The Plex Dance should help fixing this if this is because of some retained association from the file’s original naming.
Alternatively you should be able to split the items on the show level ( > Split Apart) and subsequently manually fix the match for “The Lone Gunmen”.

I take it your library is pointing at H:\Downloads\Video\TV Shows\?

Edit:
just to play it safe… best verify if the Lone Gunmen episodes have any conflicting embedded metadata. If your library is configured to prefer embedded/local metadata, this could cause additional conflicts.

Thanks, Tom80H, I will give that a try!

Also to consider:
If you are downloading/ripping directly into this folder, make sure that “automatic library scan” in Plex is off.
Do also not trigger a manual library scan while a download/rip is in progress.

Other wise you can end up scanning incomplete files, which then later on are regularly confused with other partly downloaded/ripped files.

Thanks Otto. I am ripping to another folder then copying over to the destination. I will review the settings you recommend. Thanks for the input!

In the end, I had to completely remove the libraries and add them back, but this finally did work.
