I have a show that is only pulling season titles for SOME seasons, but not all.
It does not pull the title for seasons 7 & 9, even though season 8’s title was added AFTER season 7. Ideas? Thanks!
The metadata for this seems very scattered/minimal. Did this actually air on TV?
Plex largely uses TMDB as the main source of metadata for a show. Linking things from TVDB like season titles would need the show’s TVDB listings linked to the TMDB side to tie them together in Plex’s database, and I’m not able to locate a listing for a single show on TMDB’s side that matches this.
No, these are vhs exercise shows. I have the TVDB id in the folder name, if that makes a difference.
Good timing, I was actually going to ping you over on Reddit to post here since it hadn’t refreshed fully yet. It’s odd that the Season 8 title came over, and the Season 7 episode 1 title came over, and has the tvdbid linked to it, but the rest did not.
Wondering if there’s some minimum amount of information that is needed to have it pull over.
I’ve seen many examples of shows that are not on TMDB that work fine just being on TVDB. And since the dropdown on the show lists the three TVDB ordering options and has the linked xml for the show/episodes, it’s linked to the show.
Something is blocking the full load of the metadata from TVDB. Hopefully someone from Plex can take a look for you.
See that kinda explains why TMDB has a bunch of movie entries for this woman. While the programs may be “continuations” of each other and new content, they aren’t really a TV series. So the concept of season/episode isn’t really correct. They could be treated as movies and segments as chapters within just as easily (and then all the movies would be a collection for the “show”).
I would suggest just manually entering the Season titles. It’s not that many entries and it’s a one-time thing. The individual segment details will be a bit more work of course. Unless this is the entry and then you should do the metadata work on the TMDB side instead.
I don’t mind doing that…as you said it isn’t very many, I was really more curious why it isn’t pulling automatically like the other “seasons” are.
I added this “show” to my testing library using the tvdb id. Also had to select tvdb (aired) ording Looks like the episodes are matching except for S9. Did you just add that one? Might not have been ingested into Plex yet. All my season are showing up as Season 1, 2, etc. I even tried renaming season 1 to that long name listed in TVDB and it still just shows Season 1
They added it last week, can’t remember the exact day. The strange part is they did season 7, 8 and 9 around the same time, maybe a couple hours apart. The season 8 title came over, as did the episode title. For season 7, the season title didn’t come over, but the episode title did. And for season 9, nothing came over.
It’s because the metadata is incomplete and TVDB-exclusive. While you can set an episode ordering in show details, that is to help PMS identify the files and what episode is what. It doesn’t control where media metadata is loaded from. I don’t think TMDB mods would allow this to be listed as a TV series, to be honest. That’s is going to limit how it gets supported on the Plex side.
Not sure I’ve seen season title transfer over like that before, but maybe it’s because my libraries default to TMDB. You’re right, seems odd S9 hasn’t populated. One trick I’ve done on TMDB is to “tickle” the entries. Make a small change that triggers Plex to look at it. Do you know when the latest tapes came out? Add that as the release date for the episodes, for instance.
Yah, I suggested they add at least a start date to the first episode so there’s a year on the show in case that causes issues.
When I created the test files it loaded all the season names, except 7 and 9 and episode names for some they changed. Plex actually pulled in their changes within 24 hours after the initial edit, wondering if it just had a hiccup in the process. Your suggestion to make another minor change may help push it to finish.

On the server I created the test files, it uses TMDB. But I also have the “Use season titles” in the library settings checked. So when I changed it to tvdb and refreshed it pulled down the names.
Gotcha, just looked and I did not have that clicked. Refreshed metadata and now they are there except for S7 & S9
Looks like you added some years, and now Season 9 has the season title, but not 7.
And the season 9 episodes are now linking to TVDB with the id listed in the xml, but no episode titles, but the date you added to them is showing up.
That happened very fast…wondering if it’s updating on the backend now.
Interesting, but I’m not still getting anything for S07 or S09.
